New York Sea Grant is a cooperative program between the State University of New York and Cornell University that implements educational problem-solving programs for coastal resource users, businesses, and agencies. Sea Grant supports research and provides extension education to coastal resource agencies, users, businesses, and residents and is patterned after the land-grand concept.

What You Will Do

You will work with Sea Grant team members well as community groups, local governments, state and federal agencies, and watershed groups to adapt and maintain innovative programs, materials, and social media posts. You will support the team in adapting and delivering extension programming related to water quality with an emphasis on preventing the entry of marine debris, emerging contaminants, nutrients, and sediments into the tributaries and coastal embayment’s of the lakes. Other duties include:

  • Assisting in adapting and creating existing extension/outreach materials related to water quality.
  • Drafting draft social media posts and webpages on water quality and extension/outreach events on water quality.
  • Assisting in the planning of outreach/extension events.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to identify high-priority water quality topics that require attention and education initiatives.
  • Assisting in the preparation and presentation of topically relevant content.
  • Identifying and cataloging existing outreach programs and materials on water quality and collaborating with other extension team members to update them for use.

What We Need

We are looking for a talented individual that excels at building and maintaining effective relationships with diverse stakeholders. We need someone who appreciates environmental justice. Additionally, we need someone who has the following:

  • Associate’s degree in the sciences or environmental education and 2+ years of experience working in outreach or extension programming or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong computer and technical skills in Microsoft programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access) and videoconferencing programs (e.g., Zoom).
  • Working knowledge of computer program for the production of educational materials and newsletters, such as Adobe, Canva, and others.
  • Demonstrated skills with social media outreach.
  • Experience with basic website editing.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated record of successfully providing exceptional customer service.
  • Excellent organizational experience.
  • Experience that demonstrates creativity, reasoning, and solution-finding techniques.
  • Knowledge of how to balance conflicting priorities, make informed choices, and use sound judgment in completing urgent tasks.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license.
  • Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds. 

If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you!  There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with coursework in Water Quality, Watershed Management, Great Lakes Ecology, Environmental Education, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science or other related fields.
  • Experience working on Great Lakes issues.

This position is full-time (39 hours/week) and will be located in Rochester, New York. There is the opportunity to work remotely within New York State two days a week; an on-site presence in Rochester is required three days a week.

This is a two-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
