WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR OUR 2023 SCIENCE DIPLOMACY FELLOWSHIP

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is currently accepting applications for its 2023 Science Diplomacy Fellowship. This fellowship is a highly competitive program that provides early-career opportunities in the area of science diplomacy. The fellowship starts on 1 September and ends on 30 November 2023. The fellowship covers the cost of travel to and from Vienna and the awardee’s home country at the beginning and end of the fellowship, as well as a modest stipend to offset living expenses during the period of the fellowship.  

The science diplomacy fellow will gain experience in developing engagements between IIASA, international organizations, the diplomatic corps, policymakers, the science diplomacy network, alumni, and other stakeholders. The successful candidate will work in the IIASA Communications and External Relations Department, assisting the Science Diplomacy Officer, External Relations Officer, and Alumni and Network Officer with a variety of tasks including the organization of conferences, workshops, and other events with a science diplomacy dimension. Tasks will include preparing presentations, information packs, and other materials; drafting event summaries; supporting outreach activities to raise awareness of IIASA research and science diplomacy activities among policymaking and diplomatic communities; handling correspondence with diplomatic missions and national authorities of member countries and partner states, as well as with secretariats of international organizations; preparing delegation visits to/from IIASA; as well as performing other tasks assigned by the supervisor. The fellow will also work closely with IIASA research programs, other departments and units, and other internal and external stakeholders.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • A bachelor’s or equivalent degree in international relations, law, public administration, or other relevant area, and/or current student or graduate of international or diplomatic studies.
  • Applicants from all countries are welcome, but IIASA gives priority to citizens or residents of countries in which IIASA has a Member Organization. We encourage applications from developing countries.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • First experience in the area of diplomacy and science in an international organization or national organization with an international focus, preferably dealing with research.
  • Written and oral fluency in English and proven ability to understand complex scientific research.
  • Experience with or interest in science-policy interface, science diplomacy, multilateral cooperation, and international relations.

APPOINTMENT TERMS:

The 2023 Science Diplomacy Fellowship runs from 1 September to 30 November 2023, and the selected candidate will be expected to be at the IIASA premises in Laxenburg, Austria for the full period. 

IIASA does not provide housing or additional funding for housing. Science Diplomacy Fellows do not qualify for moving, installation, or other allowances. The cost of travel from the home country to and from the institute will be covered by IIASA.

WE OFFER:

A monthly salary based on an annual gross salary of EUR 18,800.00, which is exempt from income tax in Austria.

The advertised salary is:

  • Non-negotiable
  • Subject to deductions for health insurance and/or social security.
