Job description

If you are passionate about our water environment and want to have a lasting impact on water availability whilst ensuring it is protected and enhanced for future generations then you’ll want to be part of the Integrated Environment Planning Team.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with experience of water resource planning to help us to manage and respond to the many demands on the water environment in the Thames.
As a Water Resource Specialist, you will:

  • be jointly responsible for the local delivery of water resources service
  • influence and support the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) and associated water company plans
  • build and maintain productive and influential relationships with internal and external customers including water companies
  • contribute to the coordination of drought planning and response
  • leadership and/or provide specialist advice to local and national working groups and projects
  • provide specialist advice to senior managers facilitating resolution of complex or contentious issues.

Working with colleagues and partners, you will seek optimal solutions to environmental problems, and advise on the regulatory requirements that will help to create a better place for people, wildlife, and businesses.
Working with operational teams, national colleagues, and external partners.

The team

The Integrated Planning (IEP) team is part of the wider Environment Planning and Engagement (EPE) department. You will join a fantastic team of environment planners and water quality specialists focusing on water resources activities.

The team works to strengthen our evidence base and drive integrated delivery to achieve best outcomes for the Thames catchment.

IEP team provides environmental evidence that informs and drives local priorities and influences decisions on investments for environmental improvement.

Experience/skills required

The ideal candidate will have significant relevant experience’ of:

  • strategic water resource environment planning tools and techniques.
  • Good research/analysis skills, supporting an ability to make proportionate, evidence-based inferences/proposals from information.
  • Experience of gathering, maintaining and quality-assuring data/information.
  • Good organisational skills/discipline and the ability to plan, track, deliver and evaluate work.
  • Ability to work under own initiative and as part of a larger, cross-functional/multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive and influential relationships with internal and external customers including water companies.
  • Sensitive to the needs of the internal and external customers and able to deliver outcomes through these.
  • Ability to prioritise and deliver work to relevant standards and tight deadlines.
  • Experience of translating internal guidance and instructions into local delivery.
    Contact and additional information
    The team is based in the Environment Agency’s Thames Area; there will be a requirement for some travel to attend some meetings at locations in Thames Area, but location for the role is flexible.
