The Building Technology & Urban Systems Division (BTUS) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is at the forefront of research that redefines energy and environmental performance in buildings and industry. For decades, we have been leaders in developing energy-efficient building technologies, improving the nation’s electricity grid, and exploring innovative solutions to complex energy and environmental problems.

The Building & Industrial Applications Department (BIA) works with organizations to drive the uptake of innovative solutions to energy and environmental problems. We conduct research that supports the adoption of technologies and processes that reduce the environmental footprint of an organization’s operations.

In this exciting role, you will assist with research of industrial (manufacturing and data center) energy and water efficiency at the corporate, state, and national levels. You will collect, process, and maintain data related to energy and water systems and will also conduct energy and water use assessments of data centers and manufacturing facilities. You will conduct engineering and / or techno economic analyses of energy and / or water systems and assist in disseminating the research results to key stakeholders.

What You Will Do:

  • Conducting literature review, including identifying and synthesizing research findings to identify relevant concepts.
  • Developing data collection protocols for evaluating the energy use, greenhouse gas emission, and water footprint of a facility and/or organization’s operations.
  • Collecting, organizing, and performing quality control on large data sets from multiple primary and secondary sources.
  • Conducting energy, water, and greenhouse gas emission assessments of data centers and manufacturing facilities.
  • Conducting engineering analysis of manufacturing and data center process loads and systems;
  • Contributing to resolution of research problems.
  • Assisting on  written findings and displays of visual information.
  • Contributing to dissemination of research results through presentations, reports, and research papers.
  • Supporting the measurement and verification of energy and/or water performance improvements.
  • Conducting analysis in support of energy and water conservation in buildings and industrial facilities.
  • Assisting in the dissemination of research results to key stakeholders.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Assisting in program design and implementation supporting adoption of energy and water efficiency practices in the U.S.
  • Aiding in providing technical assistance to organizations implementing energy and water management systems.
  • Assisting with the development and adoption of state, regional, and/or national energy management programs and policies.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent knowledge) in a field related experience in sustainability, energy efficiency, environmental policy / technology, or a STEM field, with extensive professional technical experience or additional education related to the position duties, typically minimum 2 years.
  • Engineering knowledge as well as familiarity with data center and/or manufacturing energy and water efficiency principles and terminology.
  • The ability to apply this knowledge when collecting data, performing analysis, and supporting the dissemination of research results.
  • Curiosity and motivation to learn, understand, and develop concepts to apply to relevant technical questions.
  • Ability to work on short- and long-term analysis projects with close supervision.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once.
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and visualize qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills and ability to interact readily in person, by telephone, and in writing.
  • Experience in Python, R, Java, C++ or similar analysis tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience in research and analysis of energy/environmental equipment or systems used in datacenters and manufacturing facilities.
  • Experience in IT system administration and support.
  • Familiarity with energy conservation technologies, systems, and practices.
  • Familiarity with building systems and industrial process systems.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The full salary range for this position is $89,100.00-$108,900.00. The budgeted salary range that the Lab reasonably expects to pay for this position is $94,050.00 -$103,950.00. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.
