The State Water Resources Control Board has an opening for a Senior Engineering Geologist (Supervisor). The incumbent will lead a unit and help implement the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). SGMA may be the biggest change in California water law in the last century. SGMA was enacted to halt groundwater overdraft and bring groundwater basins into balanced levels of pumping and recharge, ideally through local management of groundwater. Implementation will have wide-reaching impacts and is a priority for the Board and the Administration. 

Main duties will include:

  • Direct the staff of the unit and supervise and manage the administration of the State Water Board’s requirements under SGMA
  • Coordinate discussion or analysis of groundwater conditions or management with other Water Board units and Regional Water Boards, groundwater users, the media, and other state, local, tribal, federal, and non-governmental entities or individuals involved in, affecting, or affected by SGMA implementation

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Overseeing water resources and hydrogeologic investigation and planning work
  • Providing technical assistance to stakeholders
  • Evaluating surface water and/or groundwater rights in California
  • Developing or analyzing laws, regulations, or policies related to water management
  • Developing enforcement actions
  • Testifying at board hearings or in court cases
  • Managing projects or teams
  • Contract management
  • Facilitating contentious meetings or negotiations
  • Engaging with tribal governments
  • Advancing equity
