POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Center for Environmental Design Research at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking an Assistant Researcher to work approximately 12 hours a week conducting research in flooding that occurs after a wildfire, and contribute to the planning implications of various processes of post-wildfire runoff, such as flash floods, debris flows, channel avulsion, etc. The research will inform the development of bulking factors for use in the design of transportation infrastructure that may be affected by post-wildfire runoff.

The successful candidate will analyze flood after wildfire relations from experience gathered in southern California and their adaptation to other California settings, and document planning tools available to manage bulked runoff from burned areas. The successful candidate will work with a team that models wildfire risk and burn intensity, followed by flood and debris flows within watersheds that channel rainfall and snow melt. Project deliverable are due Spring 2024.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD or equivalent international degree

Preferred qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in Environmental Sciences or related discipline.
  • Have an understanding of Geographic Information Science/Systems, spatial modeling, hydrologic modeling, and Federal and California State regulation and policy.
  • Publication record in the area of flood management, river management, flood following wildfires.
  • Demonstrated experience with archival analysis, GIS, policy analysis.
  • Strong background on human management and mapping of flood-prone lands.
  • An understanding of the watershed and surface models.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team and build effective relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to document findings in reports and publications.
