Overview

The RTI University Collaboration Office seeks a prospect for the Hydrologic Systems Developer Internship within the Center for Water Resources in the Social, Statistical, & Environmental Sciences (SSES) unit. 

RTI’s Center for Water Resources is a team of water resources engineers and scientists who provide environmental science solutions and leading-edge technology products to address the increasing demand for water resources decision support in an ever-changing world.

The goals of the projects are developing, enhancing, and applying computational tools and decision support systems to improve the water resources planning and management in different geographical areas of the world.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain knowledge of basic principles of water resource management, such as water allocation, conservation, and management, to develop a comprehensive understanding of how water resources are managed.
  • Understand the regulatory framework that governs water resource management and how these regulations impact water management practices.
  • Develop technical skills related to water resource management, such as data analysis, modeling, and mapping, to better understand the complexities of water resources and develop solutions to water management challenges.
  • Learn about how water resources management involves multiple stakeholders, and how to effectively engage with these stakeholders to develop collaborative solutions. 
  • Gain hands-on experience working on water resource management projects, such as performing water quantity assessments or watershed management, to apply the knowledge and skills learned in a practical setting and gain valuable experience for their future career. 

Responsibilities

  • Working with a team of developers creating new features or enhancing functionality of RTI’s water resources modeling tools.
  • Supporting calibration and development of hydrologic and river basin simulation models to support water resources planning projects.
  • Performing data analysis and processing, including developing tools and scripts to facilitate and improve efficiency in these tasks.
  • Conducting research on existing water-energy nexus modeling platforms and implementing approaches and tools screening scenarios.

Additional Information

This paid internship will take place from May 2023 through August 2023. The internship requires a minimum commitment of 32 hours per week, and can be completed at RTI’s Fort Collins or Washington D.C. office, or remotely. Hours are flexible during business hours, Monday through Friday. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Civil or Environmental engineering programs – undergraduate or graduate student
  • Demonstrated skills and interest in computer programming and has basic computer programming experience
  • Studying fields of hydrology, water engineering, statistics, water resources planning and management, GIS, water economics, and/or computer science
  • Experience in Microsoft Excel and knowledge of relational databases (SQL language).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with .NET Programming languages (i.e., C# or VB.NET)
  • Experience with Data management using the SQL language and databases
  • Work in development of Graphical user interfaces (desktop and web) and visualization Dashboards (like Tableau systems)
  • Basic knowledge (or taken classes) in optimization techniques
