Job Purpose

We are currently looking for a Senior Modeller to join our national Water Management Team on a 2-year fixed term contract. As a Senior Modeller you’ll be applying your technical knowledge and expertise to secure the effective strategic management of water resources nationally. You’ll have the opportunity to ground your modelling first-hand through site investigations and surveys along the historic canal network.

Location & coverage 

This vacancy will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to regularly attend our hub spaces as and when required for team working and meetings. It is therefore essential that applicants are able and willing to work effectively from home.

Our hubs include: Leeds, Ellesmere Port, Burnley, Birmingham, Hatton, Newark, Milton Keynes, Gloucester, London.

Applicants would ideally be accessible to Hatton for intermittent catch ups with the leadership team.

This role will also involve regular travel to and along the reservoirs, canals and river navigations across the canal network. The regularity and distribution of travel will be discussed further at interview stage.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Key accountabilities:

  • Support Principal Hydrologists with a variety of technical water management studies (e.g. investigating the impact of future pressures such as climate change on canal water resource systems or developing the strategic national management of flood risk).
  • Assist Principal with the production of national plans, policies and guidance.
  • Construct and calibrate Aquator hydrological models to help us to plan water resource infrastructure improvements that may be required in the future to ensure a reliable canal system.
  • Validate the models you develop with use of historical data as well as data you capture first hand through site investigations and surveys.
  • Work within Trust and its partner’s policies and procedures, which include Health & Safety, environment and heritage issues.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills

Technical:

  • Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Geography, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Hydrology) or equivalent.
  • Awareness of key regulatory and legislative frameworks affecting water management (e.g. Water Resources Act, Water Act, F&WM Act).
  • Chartered member of a professional body e.g. CIWEM, desirable. 
  • Demonstrable experience in specialised field of hydrology/water resources management/hydrometry/ hydrological and/or hydraulic modelling. 
  • Broad knowledge, understanding and application of primary hydrological processes and models (Aquator and Flood Estimation Handbook).
  • Experience in managing small technical projects. 
  • Experience of handling hydrometric/spatial data (including use of GIS).

General: 

  • Good level of written and spoken communication skills.
  • Able to manage own time effectively, prioritising tasks whilst seeking guidance where appropriate.
  • Positive approach to problem-solving, enabling you to find creative solutions, as we often have unique challenges across our non-natural hydrological system.
  • Computer literate in MS Office packages (including experience undertaking detailed analysis using Excel)
  • Valid driving licence – you will be required to provide support across our waterway network.
