POSITION SUMMARY

Trout Unlimited is hiring a self-motivated and highly capable person to work as a restoration field manager in our California Inland Trout Program. The person will coordinate implementation and project effectiveness monitoring for wild and native trout habitat restoration and connectivity projects across the Sierra Nevada.  The Restoration Scientist will be responsible for developing and implementing monitoring plans for restoration project effectiveness, permitting and project construction monitoring.  This position requires supervision of field crews and frequent travel to often distant and remote back country locations. This position will have a geographical with a focus on the central and southern Sierra. They will work closely with our California Inland Trout Program Director, Inland Trout Program staff, science team and other field staff on a wide variety of headwater stream, meadow and associated habitat restoration projects.  The person will work closely with state and federal agency partners, agricultural community members, conservation community partners and TU’s grassroots chapters. The person will ideally be based near the TU Truckee Office and report to the California Inland Trout Program Director. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Coordinate teams of technicians and sub-contractors and implement restoration project construction (largely low-tech process-based techniques), project effectiveness monitoring, and aquatic resource site assessments (desktop and field-based). 
  •  Develop restoration project monitoring plans that utilize the best available science and are integrated with state and federal agency requirements for internal and external partner projects.  
  • Develop detailed field schedules?and organize trip logistics.  Trips can include remote backcountry setting with hike-in access only and wilderness area designation restrictions. 
  • Train and onboard seasonal technician staff on data collection, data processing and data entry, and field equipment storage and maintenance. 
  • Order, inventory, and properly store/maintain field equipment.  Equipment likely to include water quality monitoring sondes (YSI), streamflow and groundwater gaging equipment, smith-root backpack electrofishing unit, BMI nets and storage, carbon sequestration monitoring tools, camping/backpacking equipment, field vehicles, etc.? 
  • Understand state and federal policy and permits; work across internal interdisciplinary leadership teams; integrate the best available science; and build strong strategic partnerships. 
  • Manage databases that include large diverse datasets and ensure entry into appropriate agency and partner databases.  These likely to include: CEDEN, EcoAtlas, Sierra Nevada Meadows Clearinghouse, CNDDB, etc
  • Work closely with administrative, development, communications and conservation staff.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree in natural resources management, aquatic ecology, conservation biology, forestry, fisheries ecology, public and environmental policy, or related field. 
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience conducting scientifically robust fieldwork, preferably aquatic resources monitoring using standard equipment and protocols
  • Understanding of California and Nevada wild and native trout, watershed science and restoration, and Sierra Nevada ecology. 
  • Ability to motivate, train and supervise AmeriCorps members, interns and/or seasonal field technicians. 
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex conservation issues and TU’s mission to a wide range of audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience using MS Office Word, Excel, and GIS. 
  • Ability travel and work remotely for multiple days at a time, including in a backcountry setting at 7,000 plus elevation with miles of hiking in a day required. 
  • Valid driver’s license and own vehicle required.
