The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The North America Office helps to implement the UNEP’s Regional programs in North America (Canada and the United States) by initiating, coordinating and catalyzing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental, challenges, opportunities and emergencies. This internship position is located in the UNEP North America Office in Washington DC, USA.

The internship is for a minimum of three (3) months, with the preference for a longer commitment up to a maximum of six (6) months, depending on the needs of the Unit.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Under UN Covid ‘return to work’ rules, the UNEP North America Office requires in-person attendance a minimum of two days per week, to be agreed upon with direct supervisor.

Responsibilities

This internship has two separate but related areas of reporting. For Government Affairs, work falls under the direct supervision of the Acting Regional Director. For Environmental Affairs work, the intern will report to the Regional Sub-Programme Coordinator for Chemicals and Pollution Action and and Finance and Economic Transformations. Responsibilities include:

•Support the implementation of the supervisors’ areas of work. For Government Affairs, this will include monitoring relevant political developments within the region of interest to UNEP. Under Environmental Affairs, the intern will support the implementation of the office’s work on air quality, chemicals and waste, plastic pollution, and the circular economy.
•Support the North America Office by undertaking research, analysis and drafting of background notes or review regional reports to be submitted to headquarters and shared with North American stakeholders.
•Attend meetings, presentations and hearings, conduct research and compile, summarize, and present relevant information to supervisor and other colleagues.
•Draft short reports, memos, briefs, correspondence, and other written materials in support of the areas of work.
•Conduct research to support the development of policy briefs as well as support the preparation of communications pieces for outreach and advocacy purposes;
•May assist in the organization of workshops, internal and external meetings and outreach events, developing necessary background materials, and report writing;
•Support outreach to partners, governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and other relevant stakeholders engaged in the supervisors’ areas of work.
•Participate in group discussions and contribute insights, ideas, and feedback on topics and issues.
•Perform and participate in intern-specific duties and activities, such as drafting and distributing the internal newsletter Environment in the News in collaboration with other interns and attending the UN Internship Seminar Series.
•Provide additional support as needed.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree.
Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Studies in environmental policy, international affairs, U.S. and/or Canadian government, or other related fields preferred.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.

United Nations Considerations
