The Aquaculture Coordinator (Brackish Water) is coordinating YKAN’s brackish water aquaculture (shrimp, fish, crabs, seaweed) improvement program, carried out through collaboration with local community and scientist. The ultimate goals of the improvement program are to significantly reduce the negative impact of aquaculture on the ecosystems and improve productivities.

We’re looking for someone who is motivated and passionate with experience to coordinating shrimp, fish, crabs, and seaweed aquaculture improvement programs in partnership with local communities and scientist. This position will establish a productive collaboration with other stakeholders (industries associations, researchers, the government) in ensuring smooth project and program designs, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, with the following scope:

  • In collaboration with brackish water aquaculture experts, community partners, develop the program plan, secure ponds for responsible brackish water aquaculture.
  • Coordinating all stage of aquaculture cycles including pond preparation, selection of fish/shrimp fry, water quality and shrimp health management, feed management, and harvest and post-harvest handling.
  • Coordinating regular water and soil quality monitoring as well as shrimp health check.
  • Working with community, experts, and YKAN team to develop Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture (EAA) in the working areas.
  • Introducing sustainable brackish water aquaculture to the community by restoring mangroves in the designated areas according to EAA or other pond lay-out design by YKAN expert team.
  • Providing information for relevant YKAN team to develop proposals for fundraising.

The Aquaculture Coordinator (Brackish Water) reports to the East Kalimantan Oceans Program Coordinator and is based in Berau – East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in aquaculture or related fields and have 5 years (for Bachelor) or 6 years (for Diploma) work experience in shrimp aquaculture, vannamei or monodon shrimps.
  • Supervisory experience, including in shrimp pond construction and operation.
  • Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience using applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Web Browsers.
  • Experience with field soil and water quality tests, and shrimp health test kits.
  • Experience writing reports and communications through emails.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements. 
  • Experience in training and curriculum design.
