Role

Do you have a genuine interest in keeping land and water resources safe and sustainable in our communities and have the skills to complete water monitoring activities? Do you enjoy outdoor field-oriented work, comfortable around water, and able to perform sampling duties in all types of weather conditions?

Reporting to Water Monitoring Lead, the Surface Water Quality Technologist will be part of the Ambient Environmental Monitoring Team located in Edmonton and will be involved in Surface Water Quality Monitoring in the Lower Athabasca Region for the Oil Sands Monitoring (OSM) Program. Applying your skills and knowledge, you will participate in all areas of water monitoring covered by the OSM Program including hydrometric, meteorological, surface water quality, biological (fish and benthos), and groundwater.  Specifically, the position will concentrate on the execution of Surface Water Quality (SWQ) monitoring activities within the current Department plan and mandate, resulting in safe, efficient and accurate data collection using various equipment and sampling techniques. The water data collected by the OSM Program informs long term trends in quantity and quality, industrial water uses, cumulative effects management, scientific studies, public safety and ecosystem/watershed protection. Utilizing your strong organizational, and time management skills as well as the ability to provide innovative ideas, solve problems, and manage projects and contracts, will allow you to identify process enhancement opportunities that support continuous improvement and performance. The position will also be required to respond to environmental emergencies.

To ensure success in this role and to work effectively with others (team, Branch staff, public), you will possess excellent communication and teamwork skills; an ability to troubleshoot will also be essential especially when working in remote areas. An ability to work independently as well as strong organizational skills are also essential for the successful candidate in this position.

Qualifications

Requirements: 

  • Two-year technical diploma in a water related area.
  • Four (4) years related field and office experience undertaking all aspects of water monitoring.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent).
  • Must have the ability to swim.
  • Proficiency and experience with MS Office Applications including technical software applications is required, (e.g., various multiprobe calibration/programming software).


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Preference will be given to those with:

  • Current designation or eligibility for professional or technical association membership or designation is preferred (e.g. CET, or P. Biol.).
  • The following required safety certifications: Standard First Aid, Defensive Driver, Collision Avoidance, Trailering, WHMIS, TDG, Marine Emergency Duty / Small Vessel Operator Proficiency training and cold-water survival, Wildlife Awareness, Swift Water Rescue, and Ice Safety Technician.

Salary

$2,476.19 to $3,261.33 bi-weekly ($64,628 – $85,120/year)

Notes

Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Please Note: There are two full time permanent positions located in Edmonton. A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required to operate specialized vehicles e.g. boats, snow machines, ATVs. Our Water Monitoring teams travel in helicopters and as such, you must be comfortable with flights and heights. This position will require you to work outside in adverse weather and road conditions and be exposed to various domestic animals and wildlife. Ability to swim is fundamentally important. Long hours and/or weekend work may become necessary in the field at any time and therefore flexibility is essential.

Safety Certifications to be completed within the first 2 years of employment are: Standard First Aid, Defensive Driver, Collision Avoidance, Trailering, WHMIS, TDG, Marine Emergency Duty / Small Vessel Operator Proficiency training and Cold-Water Survival, Wildlife Awareness, Swift Water Rescue, and Ice Safety Technician.

About Your Work Environment:
In this role, you will be working in an office/lab/warehouse setting located in Edmonton. However, you will be primarily working in the field and be required to travel to remote areas under a wide range of conditions using 4X4 trucks, helicopters, boats, snowmobiles, ATV’s, canoes, and trailers.
