Internship Description

Trout Unlimited in Northeast Oregon is looking for a motivated individual with an interest in watershed ecology to join us for an internship in 2023. We are looking to fill a temporary internship position between July 1st and August 11th, with negotiable start and end dates. TU’s Northeast Oregon Program provides a well-rounded internship opportunity with hands-on involvement in our ongoing stream restoration projects. The successful candidate will receive training and experience in multiple restoration activities, including construction of beaver dam analogues (BDAs), in-stream wood placement, riparian planting, and electrofishing. TU staff will work with the intern to develop a plan for their time in the region to ensure they receive a valuable and unforgettable experience. 

The position will be based in Northeast Oregon (Baker City, La Grande, or other local area), with travel and camping at different sites throughout the work week. While a variety of conservation activities may be encountered, the primary duties are listed below.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Enhance fish and meadow habitat in headwater streams using tools including grip hoist, hand tools, chainsaws, pulleys, levers, and muscles
  • Work and camp in remote field settings for multiple consecutive days
  • Design and implement restoration actions to enhance stream morphology – this training will be provided 
  • Transport heavy gear daily over difficult terrain 
  • Work in a close-knit team with a high degree of coordination and communication 
  • Keep a positive attitude and follow directions while conducting physically demanding work
  • Perform all duties with safety as the top priority. Maintain great situational awareness and manage risk in a remote field environment.

Salary 

$13.50 per hour, plus a daily meal stipend while in the field. Mileage will be reimbursed at the 2023 federal rate of $0.655/mile if the use of a personal vehicle is required.

Requirements

  • A strong interest in native fish, wildlife, and watershed ecology
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to quickly acquire skills and learn new techniques
  • Willing to work long days in challenging environments doing physically demanding work 
  • Wilderness/remote camping experience
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team with varied skills, abilities, and perspectives
