Position Description
Seattle Public Utilities’ Water Resources Section is seeking a Water Resources Engineering intern to assist in support of planning efforts within SPU’s Water Resources program, including two (2) hydrologic field efforts. The Water Resources Section, Water Planning and Program Management Division of SPU is responsible for the management of Seattle’s water supply sources. The selected intern will report to a Water Resources Planner and Policy Advisor.
There is currently one (1) internship opportunity available, at the undergraduate or graduate level. Projected start is April 2023. The internship is for up to 24 months, or graduation, whichever comes first.
Learning Objectives include but are not limited to:
- Collection of hydrologic field data and maintenance of measurement equipment (soil moisture readings and water quality turbidity).
- Clean up and analysis of collected field data to be reported to other water resources specialists.
- Analysis of consumption data for support of seasonal demand forecasting model.
- Excel spreadsheet and report development in support of regulatory reporting efforts.
- Exposure and improved knowledge of Washington Water Law.
- Experience in professional water resources planning office environment.

Job Responsibilities
- Field data collection and sensor station maintenance within the Cedar River Municipal Watershed and along tributaries feeding the Cedar River. Field activities will support two separate projects: (i) an experimental soil moisture field campaign and (ii) water quality sampling.
- Water consumption tracking and data analysis. Download input data to update regional short-term summer water consumption forecasts. Support data quality assurance checks on long-term data sets related to regional water consumption.
- Municipal water rights and regulatory project support, with focus on current developments in Washington State Department of Ecology policy updates and regulatory projects required by SPU Water Line of Business.
Qualifications
Applicants must be currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate-level coursework, pursuing a degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or a related program.
Students must be enrolled at least part-time or full-time and maintain a 2.5 GPA (undergraduate) or 3.0 GPA (graduate).
Exception: Students do not need to be enrolled over the summer months but will need to provide at the end of Spring Quarter proof of continuing and pre-registration for the Autumn session as applicable.
Licensing and Other Requirements:
- A Washington State Driver’s License, or ability to consistently obtain timely transportation to various work locations with limited or no public transportation, is required for these internships.
- Successful applicants will be required to pass a pre-employment physical as a condition of hire.
Additional Information
Hours: During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (15-20 hours per week). The internship opportunity may permit up to 40 hours per week during breaks and the summer months. Work is normally performed between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday.
