Postdoctoral Fellow in GIS-based prediction modelling of groundwater quality

Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology)

Dübendorf, Switzerland 🇨🇭

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

The Department of Water Resources and Drinking Water (W+T) is seeking a highly motivated

Postdoctoral Fellow in GIS-based prediction modelling of groundwater quality

The aim of this position is to develop new modelling scenarios of the occurrence of natural and anthropogenic contaminants at various geographical scales as well as to assist in the upkeep and further development of the Groundwater Assessment Platform (GAP).

The Groundwater Assessment Platform (GAP, www.gapmaps.org) is an online information and modelling portal on groundwater quality relevant to human and ecosystem health. In regions with limited resources, comprehensive water quality analyses are often lacking. GAP helps to address this issue by providing geostatistical tools to create hazard prediction maps even where measurement data are sparse.

We are looking for a motivated person at the post-doc level that will be involved in the following tasks:

  • Conducting modelling of new hazard maps using GAP and offline coding
  • Active input to on-going scientific modelling projects
  • Building partnerships with internationally active organizations in the interest of disseminating the results and of securing funding for GAP
  • Assistance in the maintenance, further development and promotion (e.g. social media) of GAP

The successful candidate will have a PhD in geoscience, environmental science or similar. He/she will have an in-depth understanding of geostatistical analysis including machine-learning tools and programming skills (e.g. R, Python, Matlab). Excellent spoken/written English and ideally German, good organisational skills, an independent working style and experience with multilateral collaborations are required.

Applications will be reviewed on an on-going basis until the position is filled. Applications must include a motivation letter, a CV and two letters of recommendation. The period of appointment is 24 months, starting in spring 2023 or as agreed upon.

Eawag is a modern employer and offers an excellent working environment where staff can contribute their strengths, experience and ways of thinking.
