Job description

Do you want to play a critical role in safeguarding and improving our vital groundwater resource for future generations? Then join the East Anglian Groundwater and Contaminated Land Teams. We currently have a 12-month fixed term contract position available.

Groundwater is an important resource in our Area utilised for potable, agricultural and industrial uses. In addition, groundwater contributes to river baseflow maintaining their ecological health.

The specialists will work closely with internal and external customers across a range of disciplines. Using a variety of tools and experience, they’ll help solve complex hydrogeological problems and provide robust technical advice. The diverse range of work makes this an exciting opportunity to apply hydrogeological knowledge across a range of Land quality and water quality issues.

Main duties (depending on role):
• Providing specialist technical advice on complex groundwater and land contamination issues to inform environmental decisions through planning and permitting.
• Coaching and developing team members on groundwater quality issues.
• Providing and co-ordinating specialist technical advice and guidance to other Area teams.
• Working with water companies to improve groundwater quality through catchment management schemes.
• Managing groundwater monitoring networks.
• Keeping up to date and applying relevant legislation.

The Environment Agency take part in incident response. Our new Inclusive Incident Management Policy has been developed to support all new starters to find an incident role to suit their individual needs and circumstances. Full training will be provided.

This is a fixed term assignment for 12 months – Internal candidates, please note you must ensure you seek agreement from your line manager to apply for this role.

The team

The Groundwater and Contaminated Land Team is multi-functional team focused on protecting both the quality and quantity of our groundwater resources.

They provide technical support to internal teams and external customers on a range of groundwater related issues including:

  • Abstraction licencing
  • Permitting
  • Planning advice
  • Catchment management
  • Groundwater vulnerability

They also provide technical input to enforcement cases and incident response activities where groundwater is at risk.

Experience/skills required

Essential:

A relevant geoscience or environmental degree and/or proven practical experience in the field of hydrogeology or groundwater quality.

Experience analysing and interpreting information to inform decision making, using a variety of data sources to help draw robust technical recommendations.

As a confident communicator, you will be able to demonstrate your ability to convey information and ideas easily to a range of audiences.

Have experience of coaching and mentoring on complex technical issues.

Demonstrate knowledge of groundwater protection and how this relates to a sustainable use of water resources.

The candidate must be proficient in using Geographical Information Systems and have experience of data handling, time and file management and effective organisational skills.

It would be helpful, but not essential, if you had:
Full UK driving licence.
A working knowledge of environmental legislation.
A post graduate degree in a subject such as hydrogeology.
Professional membership or working towards one.

Please describe what you consider to be the greatest water quality threats to groundwater in East Anglia and what you consider to be the environmental consequences of not appropriately managing these threats? In your answer, please highlight what you believe to be the greatest water quality challenges to ensuring a long term sustainable groundwater resource.
