At the American Water Works Association, an excellent opportunity exists for an executive caliber professional to lead our legislative advocacy efforts with Congress.  We closely coordinate our activities through the Water Utility Council (WUC) and our chapters to develop action plans to initiate, evaluate, respond, and comment on legislative matters which directly affect water utilities. 

AWWA’s Government Affairs Office is in Washington, DC and is minutes away from Capitol Hill, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the White House.

Our Director of Legislative Affairs is a high-profile position that sets our legislative strategic direction, serves as an advisor to leadership, and interacts with leaders in the water sector.  Successful candidate can demonstrate that collaboration and effective working relationships amongst a variety of stakeholders bring about the best results and are critical to success.

Your role is multi-faceted:

  • Identify, evaluate, and address water policy issues to include PFAS, Infrastructure funding, source water protection
  • Assist AWWA’s volunteer structure to determine appropriate federal policy objectives and decide how to pursue those objectives through legislative and grass roots advocacy
  • Lead efforts to identify deliverables needed to inform policy actions and effectively construct and position those finished deliverables
  • Represent AWWA in internal and external events; up to 40% travel required

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, engineering, environmental sciences, chemistry, biology, environmental policy, or related field; combination of training within these fields preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in federal legislative processes. Advanced collegiate degree in related area preferred and may be substituted for two (2) year’s work experience required above.
  • Demonstrated experience with federal congressional legislative processes and staffing.
  • Demonstrated experience with drafting federal legislative guidelines.
  • Staff or advocacy organization experience in organizing initiatives to craft federal regulation.

·       Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
