Position Overview

The University of Calgary Hydrologic Analysis Laboratory (UC-HAL) in the Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts is seeking a dynamic and energetic team member to co-lead the laboratory stables isotopes in water analysis portion of the lab operations in their new > 400 sq. ft. laboratory space. This is a Fixed-term, Part-time position (14 hours / week) for approximately 12 months with the possibility of extension (based on length of grant funding), starting in May.

The successful candidate will report to the principal investigator, and will work in collaboration with the research group, UC-HAL. The UC-HAL is a transdisciplinary group of hydrologic researchers that focuses on regional and continental-scale water supply issues and climate change analyses. We focus on developing tools and state-of-the-art coupled modelling and analysis tools to facilitate cumulative impact assessment for river basins, particularly the high-latitude and Arctic regions. We simultaneously run field monitoring programs that collect hydrologic and isotopic data that support our model analyses, collecting specialized and often difficult to retrieve data. We are dedicated to SciComm and collaborate with the Arts to communicate our work to a broad audience, including citizen science outreach with local schools and the community. We reside within the Faculty of Arts, Department of Geography, with membership from Arts, Civil Engineering, and Science.

Responsibilities of the Laboratory Technician include supporting stable water isotope analyses (deuterium, 18-oxygen), and instrument calibration and maintenance (IsoSpark triple isotope laser analyzer, model IWA-45EP); as well as specialized deployment of an in-situ isotope vapour analyser (LGR L2140-I WVA). The successful candidate will co-manage the laboratory analyses and lab space for the UC-HAL team, and will contribute to our research output.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Coordinate laboratory analysis activities, stable water isotope sample analyses, and protocols for the lab
  • Develop and manage lab training protocols and certifications for the UC-HAL team
  • Develop and manage a citizen science water isotope collection network within the City of Calgary and surrounding communities
  • Oversee the maintenance and installation of isotope analysers
  • Sample retrieval from field sites
  • Oversee training/supervision of students working in the lab
  • Participation in community outreach events on behalf of UC-HAL
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and conference contributions is encouraged, particularly for new and innovative field methods

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A minimum of Bachelor of Science degree in geosciences or geology or hydrology or related field. Advanced degree (MSc) in the field of water resources and/or hydrology and/or geosciences is considered an asset. An equivalent combination of education (BSc) and experience can be considered
  • At least one year of experience as laboratory and/or field technician in water resources or related environmental fields is required. Preference will be given to experience in geosciences, geology or hydrology, including the installation and maintenance of equipment for (water isotope) sample collection
  • Previous experience with stable water isotope analyses; training courses related to standard methods and instrument calibration are an asset
  • Experience with data loggers and data acquisition systems is an asset
  • Good oral and written communication skills are required
  • Exceptional organizational and people skills are essential
