Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Job description

Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

This new full time post is available from 15 June 2023 on a fixed term basis until 14 June 2024.

Summary of the role

The Department of Engineering wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in a research project on development of a Groundwater Infiltration Risk Map for Sewer Networks. This South West Water funded post is available from 15 June 2023 to 14 June 2024.

The successful applicant will work on generating a Groundwater Infiltration Risk Map for Sewer Networks for a pilot case-study in South West Water (SWW)’s wastewater network which will highlight, by way of a RAG (Red, Amber, Green) rating, areas most prone to groundwater infiltration (based on groundwater levels). The risk map will enable SWW operations staff to proactively target site investigations for remedial works to tackle infiltration, in turn helping to reduce the pressure on the network and the number of CSO spills seen by SWW. The underpinning research and development into the creation of a water table map will be pivotal into this process and would demonstrate clear operational impact for SWW.

About you

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in groundwater modelling or a related area of water engineering and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will be able to develop a groundwater model for a pilot study on SWW sewer network, a risk map for the pilot study to identify areas most prone to groundwater infiltration, and an adoption and scale up plan for broader SWW wastewater catchments.

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.
