Job description
Position Summary
The Gray Lab (thegraylab.org) in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Riverside is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to investigate microplastics pollution in watersheds and coastal marine systems. Our Plastic Pollution Research Group focuses on better understanding the source, fate, and transport cascade of microplastics through intensive monitoring programs and laboratory analysis. The postdoctoral scholar with play a leading role in research employing cutting-edge techniques to quantify and characterize microplastics in environmental samples. The successful candidate will be expected to modify and develop high-throughput techniques for microplastics analysis on chemical micro-imaging/scanning platforms including a mid-IR quantum cascade laser microscope. The candidate will also be expected and supported in presenting and publishing the results of this research at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. We welcome candidates interested in getting involved in existing projects in the lab, as well as those interested in pursuing new directions within the plastic pollution field. The initial appointment is for two years with a preferred start date in late spring/summer, 2023.
Required Qualifications
- A PhD. in Environmental Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Hydrology, Computer Science, or related field completed by the start date of the position.
- Substantial, hands-on experience with spectroscopic analysis techniques, particularly mid-IR QCL and/or FTIR spectroscopy
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and R.
- Research skills in environmental microplastics monitoring and analysis, hydrology, data assimilation, and analysis.
- Ability to independently design and conduct experiments and analyze data
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, critical thinking ability, and experience leading high-quality scientific publications.
- Evidence of scientific productivity including-reviewed publications.
