  Nature of Contract    This position may be offered on a permanent, temporary or fixed term basis to suitable candidates.   This post is based at ATU Sligo campus.   Applicants should note that panels may be formed from which permanent whole time, temporary wholetime or contract vacancies may be filled.  
  Working Week  This is an appointment with a requirement to teach up to 18 hours per week in addition to undertaking the other duties of the post detailed below.

  Description of Post  The post relates primarily to the teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administrative direction of courses including:   BEng/ BEng (Hons) Civil EngineeringL6 & L7 Civil Engineering Apprenticeship HC Water & Wastewater Treatment OperationsMEng Geotechnical and Structural EngineeringMSc Water Services Management   Accredited programmes of learning are offered to full-time and part-time students, in line with the Technological University Strategic Plan, and to meet the educational needs of students, thereby contributing to industrial development of the region.     The Assistant Lecturer will be required to comply with the policy of the Faculty of Engineering & Design in the choice of teaching methods and technologies, and to undertake training to keep abreast of technological developments and teaching practices.     Subject areas to be covered include:   Civil Engineering Structural Engineering Geotechnical Engineering Drinking Water Treatment Wastewater Treatment Sludge Treatment Environmental Engineering   Course development, promotion and academic management of student learning are integral duties of the position.  
  Essential Qualifications/Skills  Applicants must, as a minimum, hold an Honours Bachelor Degree at 2.2 or better.     Applicants must have a minimum of three years post-qualification experience.    
  Desirable Qualifications/Skills      Holding a Masters (level 9) and/or PhD (level 10) in a related area and/or in teaching and learning   Relevant work experience   Relevant training/teaching/lecturing experience including online teaching.   Project management, teamwork and leadership skills, and excellent communication skills.   Experience of e-learning education management systems such as Moodle would be an advantage   Experience of research in an industrial or academic environment   Chartered member of a relevant professional body such as Engineers Ireland, ICE etc.   Such factors may or may not be taken into account should there be a need for short listing of applicants for interview.  
  Duties  The Assistant Lecturer will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment, and academic administration.   The appointee should carry out such duties as are assigned to him/her in accordance with collective agreements arrived at from time to time and authorised by the Minister for Education and Skills including but not limited to: –   Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by the management of the University, day or evening, up to 630 hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students where appropriate. There will be a norm of 18 class contact hours per week. A weighting of 1.25 will apply to hours worked after 6 p.m. (These arrangements are subject to collective agreements arrived at from time to time and authorised by the Minister for Education and Skills). Carrying out assessment, monitoring and evaluation of examinations work, and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities;Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course development; and course co-ordinationEngaging in research, consultancy, and development work as appropriate;Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings convened by management;Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by management;Engaging in promotion including student recruitment as appropriate;Promoting scholarshipParticipating in the development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements;Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of their department/school and of the University;Directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work.  When an Assistant Lecturer is supervising a Tutor/Demonstrator a reduction in teaching hours will be applied on the basis of a one hour reduction per three hours demonstration/tutorials supervised.   The performance of these duties will require attendance in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week.   The appointee shall carry out the lawful instructions of the Director/President or authorised Officer and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister for Education and Skills.  
  Salary  The salary scale attached to this post is €42,323 to €57,858 (8 points).   *Candidates may be appointed up to the 6th point (€51,886) of the salary scale for previous relevant industry/academic experience in accordance with University Policy.

If an existing Lecturer in a technological university or institute of technology applies for this Assistant Lecturer post, they may, at the discretion of the TU/IoT, be appointed at Lecturer level, retaining their current pay and incremental date.”  
Other Relevant Information  The Faculty of Engineering and Design is the largest Faculty in ATU Sligo. It has a highly successful track record in educational innovation, research, quality and provision and currently operates in a fast-changing educational and market environment.   The Department of Civil Engineering and Construction sits within this Faculty bringing together the highly successful full time and online part time programmes related to the build environment. It offers full time programmes from Level 6 to Level 10 in areas including Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Advanced Wood and Sustainable Building Technology and Construction Project Management.   In close collaboration with industry, the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction has developed Ireland’s largest suite of part time online construction related programmes from Certificate Level 6, to Masters Level 9. Programmes range from Construction and Project management, accredited with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) as well as Quantity Surveying, accredited with the Society of Chartered Surveyors of Ireland (SCSI). In addition, the department has formally collaborated with industry partners to address key skill requirements. These include a suite of road and transport related programmes for the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, programmes at Level 6 and Level 9 with Irish Water and Property Services, Facilities Management and M&E Quantity Surveying with the SCSI.
