Role: Water Scientist

We are currently recruiting for a Consultant with an interest in water sciences to join our team to help us deliver our broad portfolio of work based around catchment solutions with a focus on delivery of wider benefits including enhanced social value and natural capital. We are a growing multi-disciplinary team comprised of systems thinkers and specialists in cornerstone disciplines such as natural flood management, environmental assessment and economics and strategic landscape and nature based solutions. By advising and collaborating with a broad range of clients, we unlock solutions tailored to their needs and requirements, underpinned by value creation and a sustainable approach to design integration and delivery. We operate in various markets, including Energy, Water, Cities and Transport, and across a wide range of portfolios (this role to operate within our Climate and Sustainability Services Portfolio). We work with clients from major infrastructure companies to rural estates, NGOs and local and regional place-shaping authorities.

You will be working closely on a day-to-day basis with Arup’s West leader for Water Environment as well as colleagues from a range of disciplines and locations.

There will be opportunities to drive research for Arup through our own internal investment and development of key collaborations with partners and universities.

The critical elements of this role comprise:

Technical support to project delivery – especially around an area of water science – across environmental enhancement projects, flood risk schemes, and major infrastructure and supporting relationship building and work winning across the UK

Why Arup?

What would you be working on?

  • Flood Risk Management projects – especially those related to nature-based solutions. We would anticipate you to use of desk based technical tools to assess NFM potential. Initially this would be with support from others, but with rapid transition to a technical lead role on projects
  • Engaging in catchment vision definition projects – understanding key opportunities and constraints to provide advice on enhancement options and key drivers at the catchment scale.
  • Water Framework Directive (Water Environment Regulations) assessments – supporting on assessing the alignment of proposals with WFD and supporting the design development to ensure compliance and enhancement. Development and contribution of core skills around geomorphology and water quality.
  • Providing ad-hoc advice around the water environment, and its interactions with development (especially of major infrastructure), consenting requirements and opportunities to deliver environmental enhancements.

Key expectations

  • Development of key skills in proprietary modelling packages and nurturing of those skills in others
  • Commitment to develop applicable skills in one or more core specialisms of relevance: e.g.  geomorphology, water quality etc
  • Meaningful engagement with colleagues in Newcastle (on a predominantly remote basis) to create a virtual centre of excellence around catchment modelling
  • Collaboration across teams in the West and construction of a strong internal network, support by appropriate office presence
  • Operation with a consultancy mindset – attendant to requirements around delivering to scope and time.
  • Role is likely to be c.5% site based, with the remainder split between office and home working. We support travel to other offices as part of network development and collaborative working, and UK travel is encouraged. The working week is expected to comprise predominantly project work with some capacity for other activities such as training, business development and research where this is time bound and applicable to the business with clear objectives.

  • Development of new Arup offerings, especially around modelling and monitoring
  • Contribution of soils aspect of background to emergent Arup offerings around Regenerative Land Management
  • Opportunity to grow a team to support further development of these capabilities

Is the role right for you?

Experience required:

  • Experience in a consultancy enviroment or a regulator in a similiar role
  • Familiarity with water frameworks directive and envrionmental impact assessments

Education:

  • A degree in either geography or envrionmental science
  • A masters degree would be preferable
