We are looking for

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Develop Management Strategy Evaluations (MSE) for data-rich and data-limited fishstocks in marine waters as well as freshwater.
  • Contribute to stock assessments and quantitative fisheries advice      
  • Engage in discussions on how to improve the estimation of fisheries reference points and mixed fisheries considerations
  • Participate in international working groups and workshops
  • Develop a good sense of how knowledge development can contribute to sensitive political dossiers
  • Report findings in both scientific papers and at conferences, but also through reports and presentations to clients and stakeholders.

We ask

  • An university-educated fisheries scientist with a keen interest in all aspects of fisheries research. We prefer a candidate with a PhD.
  • You have experience with MSE and preferably with the FLR packages in R.
  • You have a firm theoretical background and you’re open to applied research questions as well.
  • You are able to report your research in clear and high-quality reports and you can translate results into concrete advice to the government, users and other stakeholders.
  • You enjoy working as part of a team and as such, enjoy to receive and give constructive feedback and work under time pressure.
  • You are pro-active, entrepreneurial, and interested in the stakeholders and societal debate that requires our expertise.
  • Your level of communication skills in English is C1 and for non-native speakers of Dutch: you’re willing to learn Dutch to ensure effective communication with our stakeholders.

Location is IJmuiden

This is a function in the additional formation of WMR. This means that the term of employment is initially 1 year and will be extended annually, depending on the availability of research projects and performance. We intend to enter into an employment relationship with each other for a longer period of time within the legal terms: Current legislation allows for a maximum of 3 years or 3 contracts.
Of course, these excellent benefits also include a suitable salary. Depending on your experience, we offer a market-based salary of up to € 5.479,- for a full working week of 36 hours in accordance with CAO Wageningen Research (Hay profile WO Researcher 3/ scale 11, additional group position).

We are
Wageningen Marine Research (WMR) is a leading marine ecological research institute employing approximately 190 people. We do our work from three locations: IJmuiden, Den Helder and Yerseke. WMR works on field research, theoretical research, experimental research, data management and modelling. The institute has modern research facilities and is ISO 9001 certified. The research from our fisheries team has a strong focus on fish stock assessment, management strategy evaluation and the impact of fisheries on the ecosystem. We advise the Dutch government and the European Commission on Total Allowable Catches. Furthermore, we advise on the management of fisheries, both nationally and internationally, i.e. through ICES. Finally, we work close together with the fisheries sector on innovation and alternate fisheries strategies.
