The University’s mission is to let knowledge serve and our urban setting and unique relationship with the public agencies and industry provide a living laboratory for research and collaboration. More than 23,000 students from all backgrounds bring diverse perspectives to our classrooms and campus life, from the tree-lined Park Blocks to the bustling Urban Plaza and our state-of-the-art engineering and computer science research, teaching, and lab spaces. The Willamette River passes through downtown Portland and the Columbia River along with the Pacific Ocean are nearby. Sustainability and climate change are not only at the core of the Department, but are also part of the broader mission of the university. The Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science has 96 full-time faculty and enrolls more than 2,800 students who complete bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral degrees, and graduate certificates from our five departments (civil and environmental engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, engineering and technology management, and mechanical and materials engineering). The college has a commitment to serving students in a welcoming environment and strives for excellence and impact in our research and teaching mission. More information can be found on the Maseeh College website. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) currently has 25 faculty members and researchers serving over 380 undergraduate and 80 graduate students. CEE offers ABET-accredited B.S. degrees in both Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering and graduate programs at the master’s and doctoral levels. The CEE departmental strategic vision includes research themes in prevention, planning, and management of extraordinary events; evaluation, development, and deployment of technologies that promote a better society; and creation and maintenance of healthy environments. The Departmental culture encourages support and mentoring for all new faculty by promoting academic career growth and collaboration among colleagues.
Position SummaryThe Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science at Portland State University (PSU) invites applicants for a tenure-track position in Environmental and Water Resources (EWR) Engineering, to begin September 2023. The position requires an earned doctorate in civil/environmental engineering or in a closely related field. The primary target of hiring is at the Assistant Professor level, but applicants may be considered at the Associate and Professor ranks. The expectations for the successful candidate include: 1) development of an externally-sponsored research program that per the Departmental vision uses advanced experimental and computational methods to provide knowledge/education that serves society and the environment; 2) teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses, the latter to include one or more graduate courses in their area of expertise; and 3) service to the University and profession. Candidates dedicated to excellence in teaching and effective mentoring of students with diverse backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. We seek candidates that will excel as independent researchers but importantly also develop synergistic and mutually leveraged collaborations with the existing EWR faculty. Areas of interest as regards candidate expertise include: macroscale hydrology; water resources/water quality management at the watershed and larger scales; and river/estuary/coast systems. Familiarity with advanced concepts and tools such as remote sensing, “big data”, machine learning, AI, and FLOPS-intensive computer modeling are of particular interest. Research efforts that consider the effects of climate change are viewed as especially important. A major PSU advantage regarding EWR study in the above areas is the fact that Portland is the center for management of the Columbia River Basin, which extends over nearly 700,000 square kilometers and involves seven states and the Canadian province of British Columbia.
