The USGS Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center’s Davie, Florida office is opening a position through the Pathways Recent Graduate Program. To qualify for this appointment, candidates must have graduated within the previous two years, or must be currently enrolled in a degree program AND expected to complete all degree requirements no later than 04/30/2023. The Davie, Florida Office of the USGS Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center (CFWSC) includes a staff of 42 scientists, engineers, technicians, contractors, and support staff and is currently looking for an additional team member. This center conducts projects that address a wide variety of topics including aquifer characterization, water availability, climate change, extreme hydrologic events, hydrologic modeling, surface water-groundwater interaction, harmful algal blooms, ecohydrology, and water quality.

CFWSC hydrologists perform a wide variety of tasks that require an understanding of geology, stratigraphy, geomorphology, carbonate sedimentology and diagenesis, paleontology, borehole and surface geophysics, geochemistry, biology, statistical analysis, mapping, surface water hydrology, hydrogeology, and computer modeling. The typical CFWSC hydrologist has expertise in one or more of these fields of science, and experience or education in many, but not necessarily all of them. Specific project work that the selected candidate will initially be involved with includes: (1) collection, preparation, and examination of core and rock samples to understand the stratigraphy and hydrostratigraphy of south and central Florida’s carbonate aquifer system, (2) drill-site acquisition of borehole geophysical logs and rock core to evaluate aquifer properties, (3) analysis of seismic reflection data, (5) operation and management of the Carbonate Aquifer Characterization Laboratory (CACL), (6) contributing to the development of scientific proposals and reports including maps, figures, and data tables, and (7) management of projects as assigned. The position we are seeking to fill is a recent graduate hydrologist GS-7 or GS-9, which offers a rare opportunity to transition into a permanent position after one year.
