Job Summary

This position exists to provide technical analysis of the nature, distribution, appropriation, and sustainability of groundwater throughout Minnesota. Specifically, the position addresses sustainability of the drinking water resource by reviewing proposed water appropriations and proposed projects that have the potential to influence groundwater quality and quantity. The position support DNR Area and Regional hydrologists throughout Minnesota. This position will work on sustainability issues for groundwater resources in response to the increased demands for water supply including municipal supplies, rural water supplies, agricultural water supplies, and commercial and industrial water supplies – all of which complete for the limited groundwater resource that must also sustain groundwater-dependent ecosystems.

The chosen candidate for this position will have the option to select a primary work location from the following at the time of hire: St.Paul or Fergus Falls. Overnight travel is required for this position up to 1 to 2 days per week and 4 to 5 days per week up to several weeks per year. This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete a telework agreement.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geological Engineering, Hydrology, Forest Hydrology, Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, Soil Science, Water Resources Management, Hydraulics, Environmental Science, Earth Science, or related major.
  • Transcript requirement:
    • Three hydrogeology qualifying courses in the areas of: Hydrogeology, Groundwater Hydraulics, Contaminant Transport, Groundwater Modeling or equivalent OR
    • Two hydrogeology qualifying courses and two geology qualifying courses in Geomorphology, Geochemistry, Glacial geology, Structural Geology, Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, Geologic Mapping, Geophysics, or equivalent.
  • Two years of professional experience in surface water or groundwater hydrology, soil and water resource management, hydrogeology, hydrologic modeling, geochemistry or regulatory work. An advanced degree in the appropriate major may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Experience with writing technical documents and ability to prepare documents that are clear, organized, correct, and grammatically sound.
  • Knowledge of the principles of groundwater flow and ability to analyze hydrogeologic data. 
  • Ability to understand and apply geologic data on well logs, cross sections, and geologic maps. 
  • Experience with groundwater monitoring field methods.   
  • Ability to effectively present technical information and explain the results of analyses to other staff, local government, and the public.
  • Experience working independently on project tasks that may be individual or team-oriented. 
  • Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with colleagues and constituents, individually and in teams.
  • Willing to receive and provide peer review constructively and respectfully.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in any of the disciplines listed above. 
  • Experience applying water regulations, statutes, rules, and policies.
  • Work experience with advanced mapping applications such as ArcMap.
  • Experience analyzing data from aquifer tests.
  • Experience with well drilling methods.
  • Licensed as a Professional Geoscientist in Minnesota. 

Physical Requirements

Occasionally lifting articles such as 50 pound bags maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
