What you will be doing

Coastal waters provide a wide range of services to humanity, which may be impacted by the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Proliferation of HABs is impacted by a multitude of environmental, climatic, and biological factors that together determine their timing, magnitude, and toxicity. This project sets out to explore the effect of combined factors on HABs in coastal waters across Europe by analyzing long-term data, complemented with data on toxins and toxin genes. Also, the project will involve field studies in waters along the Dutch coast, and include microcosm experiments to test the combined effects of key factors based on the long-term data and fieldwork.

What you will be contributing

You will contribute to the analysis of long-term data, fieldwork and experiments, and be a member of a large EU consortium aimed to understand the impacts of combined global change factors on biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and services.

Job requirements:

  • Holding a PhD with a background in phytoplankton ecology, microbiology, or related fields.
  • Experience with analyzing time series, marine fieldwork, and/or mesocosm experiments.
  • Strong intrinsic motivation for doing science, a natural curiosity, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Professional working proficiency in English, including scientific writing.

What we are offering

We offer ample opportunities for personal development through mentoring, training programs, and courses. Because this project is part of a larger European consortium, we also can offer various opportunities for collaboration. Moreover, the project includes funds for conference visits.
