SCIENTIST

Ottawa Riverkeeper is seeking a Scientist to lead our community-based monitoring programs. You will support our research and analysis as we work to evaluate the health of the Ottawa River.

  • 37.5hrs/week, permanent position.
  • Starting salary: $48,000-53,000 
  • Office-based or hybrid working arrangements are possible. Ottawa Riverkeeper’s office is located at River House, 501 Sir Georges-Etienne Cartier Parkway, Ottawa
  • Able to work the occasional evening or weekend when called upon
  • Start date: As soon as possible 
  • Closing date: January 15, 2023. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Implement community-based monitoring programs
  • Recruit, train, and retain volunteers to participate in monitoring programs.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of project databases. 
  • Be responsible for the Ottawa Riverkeeper Open Data Portal including the application of open data protocols.
  • Collect datasets from various data portals, develop tools to facilitate analysis, and research best practices for data interpretation. 
  • Write reports and summary documents that provide analysis of key health indicators 
  • Work with colleagues in our Communications team to produce engaging content for our newsletter, website, and social media platforms.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key partners

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Master’s or 2-3 years of project coordination experience. 
  • Current knowledge of and experience with project design, research methods, data management and analysis
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines. 
  • Very strong communication skills (oral and written), including the ability to convey scientific information to diverse audiences
  • Knowledge of Google Suites, ArcGIS or QGIS, and programming software such as R
  • Functionally bilingual (French and English) 

ASSETS

  • Work experience or area of study focused on river ecosystems, geomorphology, or nutrients in freshwater systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to support and maintain connections with key community partners
  • Ability to confidently deliver presentations and workshops
  • A proven track record of effective project coordination
  • Experience supporting and empowering community involvement in scientific research, particularly with individuals from diverse backgrounds or people who have not had the opportunity to participate in scientific research before
