A role that works with industry, community and traditional owners, you will be providing technical advice and assessment in relation to activities that may impact on the sustainability of water resources within the SAAL region. This position is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in playing an important part in managing the water resources in the Arid Lands region.

This is a key role supporting the implementation of the Far North Prescribed Wells Area Water Allocation Plan and decision-making for Water Affecting Activities to ensure it is consistent with legislation, water policies and other statutory responsibilities. The position will work closely with the Water Team, delivering important water projects for the region and providing high quality technical advice and customer service in response to enquiries, issues and urgent matters relating to the management of water resources.

You are adaptive and driven with experience with government legislation and will enjoy the challenge and opportunity of working with a diverse range of stakeholders to deliver water projects and contributing to strategic planning processes and support the formulation of policy relevant to key water related issues.

This role will suit someone with experience or a passion for natural resource management and experience with working with a range of stakeholders. Ideally based in our regional Port Augusta office with consideration to an Adelaide base should mutual needs be achieved we welcome your enquiries and interest.

About the Role:

The Water Project Officer provides technical advice and assessment in relation to activities that may impact on the sustainability of water resources within the SAAL region.  The role supports implementation of the Far North Prescribed Wells Water Allocation Plan and decision-making for Water Affecting Activities to ensure it is consistent with legislation, water policies and other statutory responsibilities.  The role supports the development, monitoring, evaluation, reporting and continuous improvement of water policies and implementation of water management programs that integrate planning and policy outcomes.

The position takes direction from the Senior Water Resource Officer and works closely with the water project team to assist with delivery of water projects, environmental water planning and monitoring programs, ensuring that community activities are delivered efficiently and effectively.

Ideally located in Port Augusta (with flexible working arrangements able to be negotiated), the region offers a great outdoor lifestyle close to the Flinders Ranges, Eyre Peninsula and outback. This role requires remote distance driving and overnight absences.

Key Outcomes:

  • Provide high quality technical advice and customer service in response to enquiries, issues and urgent matters relating to the management of water resources, including advice sought from technical and specialist staff.
  • Establish effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders including DEW water experts, pastoralists, mining and industry groups, other state government agencies and the community and ensure relevant stakeholders are informed of water management policies and issues and/or have the opportunity to contribute to the development, implementation or review of these policies or issues.
  • Contribute and prepare timely, informed and expert advice and recommendations for the SA Arid Lands Landscape Board, the Minister, General Manager and key stakeholders, including providing advice on state-wide, interstate and national initiatives, and industry exploration, development and operational assessments and review.
  • Contribute to strategic planning processes and support the formulation of policy relevant to key water related issues.
  • Facilitate water resource management programs/projects, at appropriate stages from planning, implementation, reporting and evaluation, to achieve NRM objectives and priorities.
  • Develop and support activities or initiatives that increase the awareness and/or participation of the community and industry in the identification or implementation of sustainable water resource management.
  • Provide specific advice and recommendations on Water Affecting Activity Permit applications, monitor compliance/non-compliance with WAA requirements and evaluate the permit process for continuous improvement.
  • A degree in natural resources management or similar is desirable.

Special Conditions:

  • May be required to participate in fire management or associated duties.
  • Current class “C” drivers licence and willingness and ability to safely operate a 4wd is essential.
  • Intrastate and remote area travel is required, including travel in light aircraft.
  • Demonstrates ability to work alone and be self-reliant.
  • Some out of hours work is required, necessitating occasional overnight stays.

  • This role has been designated as a Position of Trust pursuant to the standards required in the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework.
