A critical aspect of the projects in our lab is that there is a positive and significant contribution to our societal pursuit of global food security and ecosystem sustainability. Sustainable soil management is one of many first steps towards achieving this, as it is our soils that nourish our crops, as well as provide fundamental environmental and public health services across all ecosystems. Our work integrates soil ecology and biogeochemistry to understand soil organic matter turnover and accumulation and microbial-plant interactions that affect carbon and nutrient cycling under land use and global change. We work in the field, greenhouse, and lab and use a variety of tools to probe microbial-biogeochemical interactions including: isotopes, microbial functional assays, spectroscopy, and biological and chemical molecular techniques.
The Soil Biogeochemistry and Ecology Lab is committed to increasing the recruitment, retention, and success of underrepresented groups in STEM.
