Message From the Board

The Sea to Sky Hospice Society team has spent the summer refocusing, realigning and re-envisioning our goals for the coming months. Staff, board members, volunteers and community have all pitched in to help us continue to provide support to Sea to Sky residents experiencing grief and bereavement.

Hospice programs are restarting and we are experimenting with telephonic and online options. Additionally, we are developing a pandemic safety plan, which will help to guide the safe resumption of our volunteer programs. The Sea to Sky Hospice Society was a recipient of a $4000 grant from GFL Environmental, which will help fund programs such as the Squamish General Hospital Oncology Tea Service and Bereavement Support programs. Thank you GFL!

Thank you also to Ryder Gray who successfully applied for a $1500 grant through TakingITGlobal. The grant will be used to purchase additional planters for the hospice gardens along with an iPad and Bluetooth speakers that will be useful in the hospice. You can read more about Ryder’s initiative in the Squamish Chief here.

The gardens continue to flourish and we were awarded a generous $10,000 grant from the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District to build a gazebo for

hospice residents and their loved ones to enjoy. This will be a well-used feature of the gardens for years to come. We are so grateful for the ongoing support of the SLRD.

To round out the thanks, we would like to acknowledge the departure of two valued board members. Mark McKenzie, our Past Chair and Nadine Kinshela, our Secretary, are both leaving the board this fall. We wish them well and thank them for their advocacy and dedication to hospice and palliative care.

If you haven’t already, please take a minute to take a look the new virtual home of the Sea to Sky Hospice society. The website was thoughtfully designed by Jen Beliveau of Jenuine Marketing and is your one-stop shop for all information related to the Sea to Sky Hospice Society.

Our AGM will be held on October 26 in a virtual format. Brush up on your Zoom skills and, if you are a member please join us from the safety and comfort of your home. Keep an eye on your inbox for more information about the AGM.

Take care to all and we’ll see you at the AGM!

Our Programs

Hospice in a Changed World

The Sea to Sky Hospice Society has offered numerous supportive programs in our communities over the past 14 years. These supports are available at no cost to community members in need when dealing with life limiting illness and loss.

SEA TO SKY HOSPICE SOCIETY PROGRAMS

The Sea to Sky Hospice Society continues to adapt to the new normal of COVID 19. Due to visitation restrictions it has become harder for volunteers to be actively engaged in supporting individuals living with life limiting illness or at end of life in the various settings, home, hospital, long term care of the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Sea to Sky Community Hospice. Staff have increased their support of patients, caregivers and the bereaved through calls and video meetings, attempting to ensure hospice services continue to offer an extra layer of support. Though different from our typical in person supports, those caring for loved ones and the bereaved seem to appreciate the connection in these unusual times.

Volunteers remain the heart of hospice and those who can continue to offer telephonic support to others in the community as well as support our fall bereavement programs. We will be offering a drop in grief support walking group on Wednesday's from September 23rd- October 28th 10:30-11:30am meeting at The Adventure Centre front doors. No registration is required for this group however please email hospice.seatosky@vch.ca to complete a consent form. All social distancing recommendations will be followed.

We will also be running an online grief support group Tuesday's October 27th- December 1st, 10:00-11:00am. This group will require registration to receive the online link. Please email hospice.seatosky@vch.ca for more information.

All new program information can be found on our facebook page and our instagram page.

If you or someone you care about is in need of hospice support please call our cell phone at 604-848-5751 and someone will return your call as soon as possible.

Be sure to stay tuned to our social media (FB and Instagram) to stay up to date on our fall programming and support services.

Programs are free to join but registration is required. Please call Hospice Office at (604) 567-2009 or email info@seatoskyhospicesociety.ca

Volunteers

We would like to give a big hand of applause to the many people that volunteer on behalf of the Sea to Sky Hospice.  The hospice is fortunate to have a dedicated group of individuals that commit their time to being on the board of directors, as well as the many volunteers that participate in the different committees, art, fundraising, gardening and hospice care.  We could not do it without you!

This past season we have had a number of volunteers working in the Sea to Sky Hospice Gardens, as well as brainstorming fundraising ideas, sharing their graphic design skills and assisting with the beautiful art collection at the hospice, in addition to the countless hours of volunteer work on the various committees of the board of directors. If you are interested in learning more about our volunteer program please visit our volunteer page.

Other ways to help………….

Thank You...
Ryder Gray
for your boundless enthusiasm for applying for and receiving a grant on behalf of the hospice that enabled the landscape around the hospice to be graced with 4 planters filled with succulents and an i pad for showing off the artwork to the hospice patients as well as speakers to have in the rooms. You and your lovely family gave so much joy to the Sea to Sky Hospice and we are very grateful!
Marion Payette & the BC Rail Pioneers
for your caring donation for the hospice.  Your support is greatly appreciated!
Nancy Edwards and GFL
Thank you to Nancy Edwards and Denise Imbeau at GFL for the work that you did to procure a grant for the hospice to be used for a new cart to assist with serving tea to patients receiving Chemotherapy while at the hospital.
The S2SH garden volunteers
Thank you to the amazing crew of volunteers that have turned out spring, summer and fall to make the garden the beautiful space that it is. We couldn't do it without you!
As we celebrate the one year anniversary of the opening of the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation Sea to Sky Community Hospice we have much to be thankful for: a beautiful welcoming building to provide care to those in need; incredible gardens to provide solace; remarkable artwork to grace the walls; and programs to support the many needs of those requiring hospice support.  Please consider making a donation today to support this essential service in the Sea to Sky corridor.

We had hoped to have a silent auction of the wonderful artwork that has been donated to the hospice, however due to COVID and social distancing, we are building a digital catalog of the artwork which will be available to view later this month on the new Sea to Sky Hospice Society website at: https://seatoskyhospicesociety.ca/
