Dear NCCT Supporter,

Spring is in the air! The diversity of bird calls is growing daily and the cranes, geese, and others flying overhead remind us that seasonal change is upon us. NCCT has been busy rolling into spring by working on new land protection projects and planning gatherings for 2023. Read below for NCCT news and to learn more about upcoming opportunities to spend time outdoors together and support local conservation.

See you outside!

  • Byron Shaw, soil and water science professor in the College of Natural Resources at UW-Stevens Point, was among the first in the nation to recognize that pesticides used on farm fields could leach through the soil to contaminate groundwater. Byron established what is now the Water and Environmental Analysis Lab. In 2008, Byron and his wife, Margaret, donated a conservation easement to NCCT permanently protecting their Portage County property. Byron passed away in 2016 and is warmly remembered as a defender of water quality.

  • Michael Dombeck led America’s two largest land management agencies: the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. He received degrees in biology and teaching from UW-Stevens Point.

  • Mark Martin and Susan Foote-Martin have protected, restored and enhanced appreciation of natural resources during their careers and volunteering. Mark Martin graduated from UW-Stevens Point in 1971 with a degree in wildlife management.
