OUTREACH
Hello geographers! I always joke with family and friends that New Year’s isn’t a thing for me. Instead, Labour Day is my New Year’s Day. But as we get settled into the new year and all of the challenges it is throwing our way, we must make sure to remember the importance of social issues facing geography.

OAGEE member Claudette Phillips (@NHSPhillips) has tweeted some great articles related to geography and Black History Month. While not officially part of the Advancement mandate, I do think this is something we should all be encouraging ourselves to do. Almost every year of my life has included a trip to Killbear Provincial Park and I can remember distinctly a couple of years ago, when, for the first time, I saw a black family enjoying the park and it got me thinking about who has access to our wilderness. Race, Privilege, and the Canadian Wilderness by Phillip Dwight Morgan is a must read with his perspectives on this issue.

CONFERENCES
Greetings fellow geographers. The question of face-to-face 2021 conferences remains a ball in the air. There are a number of possibilities under consideration, but there are still too many questions to assure a face to face Spring conference. We can continue to share new materials and ideas. It is never too early to start thinking about potential presentations. We have all been developing new, remote teaching materials and the Fall conference is an excellent place to share them.

CURRICULUM
Check out upcoming issues of the Monograph and the OAGEE website for lessons that explore ESRI’s Spatial Thinking Virtual Classroom.

These lessons use ESRI StoryMaps to explore the concepts of geographic thinking, graphic literacy, financial literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and healthy & active living.  Students of all grades and levels will enjoy investigating What is Where, Why There, and Why Care? while exploring the themed maps included in these current and relevant activities.

GIS Movie Nights – Marvel Superhero Origins
  • Where do most Marvel Super Heroes live? Why?  (Patterns & Trends, Spatial Significance)
  • Where do very few Marvel Super Heroes live? Why?
  • Identify any connections that can be made with the information presented in this map and Black History Month?
GIS in Sports – Famous Ballpark Foods
  • Which MLB stadiums have the most expensive food?
  • Which MLB stadiums have the least expensive food?
  • How many Primanti Bros. Sandwiches can you eat at a Pittsburg Pirates game before exceeding the recommended daily calorie intake?
  • If the average ticket costs $10, how much revenue could the Blue Jays generate if they sell all of the seats to a home game (ie. the Rogers Centre is at full capacity)? What other businesses generate income based on Blue Jay home games? How has Covid impacted this?
