NYS Legislature Passes Hospital and Nursing Home Staffing Bills

On Tuesday, May 4, the NYS Assembly and the NYS Senate passed two bills that impact staffing in hospitals and nursing homes. The bill related to hospital care will require hospitals to convene clinical staffing committees to develop a staffing plan for that specific hospital. The staffing plan would need to be posted in units with the actual staffing listed as well. The bill related to nursing home care will require every nursing home in the state to provide a minimum of 3.5 hours of care per resident per day. If signed into law, these bills will not go into effect until next year.

NY StateWide Senior Action Council has long advocated for adequate staffing to ensure patients receive the quality care they deserve. Both bills fall short of this goal. We will continue to work with the Legislature, the Governor and the Department of Health to improve staffing in both hospitals and nursing homes.

At this time, no further calls to state legislators are needed.
