We create lasting change

The School of Medicine holds nearly $60 million in multi-year, National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grants for studies into the causes and treatments for diseases including muscular dystrophy, gastrointestinal disorders, HIV, fertility, cancer, infectious diseases, and battlefield injuries. The basic science departments boast two of three (and collaborate in the third) Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grants, the only IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence grant.

IDeA Research Center

IDeA grants are unique program grants with the intent of increasing biomedical research infrastructure and NIH funding in states that are historically underfunded by NIH.

IURP

The International Undergraduate Research Program (IURP) works to promote inter-continental scientific interactions between undergraduate and graduate students broadening student experiences internationally.

CBESS

Community of Bilingual English Spanish Speakers Exploring Health and Sciences (CBESS) is an interdisciplinary project funded to the University of Nevada, Reno by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The Jones Lab

Muscular Dystrophy Research

Our primary research focus is on facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). FSHD is the most prevalent muscular dystrophy that affects males and females, children and adults. There are both genetic components and epigenetic aspects that correlate with the highly variable levels of disease severity and progression. Currently there is no cure and there are no ameliorative treatments.
