NOLA Gold Rugby
is excited to host the Collegiate
Rugby Championship
(CRC) 7's Tournament Memorial Day weekend.
About the CRC: The CRC provides a great recruitment opportunity for NOLA Gold and other major league rugby teams to identify collegiate rugby talent.

The CRC is the crown jewel of collegiate rugby. 7-a-side rugby was announced as an Olympic sport in 2009, and the CRC was birthed the next year, putting college rugby on national television, serving as the brightest stage in the game and the premier breeding ground for future Olympians.

Three-time Patriots Super Bowl champion Nate Ebner (Ohio State) and Olympic teammates Danny Barrett (Cal) and Madison Hughes (Dartmouth) are all CRC alums. So are NOLA Gold standouts Cam Dolan (Life), Nick Feakes (Lindenwood), Ross Depperschmidt (Alabama), Malcolm May (Penn State) and Cian Barry (UCLA).

New to the 2021 CRC is the “May Madness” bracket, featuring 32 men’s and 16 women’s teams playing in a single-elimination format. They’ll be vying for the Pete Dawkins Trophy, named after the 1958 Heisman Trophy winner, who invented the overhand lineout throw while playing rugby for Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.

The three day tournament will take place at the Gold Mine on Airline Memorial Day weekend: Saturday, May 29th, Sunday, May 30th, and Monday, May 31st.

The Columns Monday music has been moved up to 6 to 9 p.m. temporarily, because of a shortage of employees. This week we had an incredible evening with guest artist Clarence Johnson III, and accordion newcomer Dallas Vietty sat in and brought the house down! The new setting configuration at present only holds about 30 to 35 persons, so I highly recommend reservationseat every one for the first set this week. I am broadcasting the first sets live on Facebook from 6 to 7 CST (John Rankin Music,

MORE INFO:
Yes, I am returning to play at the Columns! The new timeis EVERY MONDAY starting 5/24, and now 7 to 10, an hour earlier.

I will be playing in the ballroom, but we might try the front porch when the weather is tempting. So far Mondays are the only night with music. I think that’s because my friends have kept calling the hotel for the last year, so it’s all your doing — and thank you very much.

The Columns has benefited from its new owners! It still feels like the old place but it’s more sophisticated. New restrooms, beautiful lighting, bar, modern electronics, and more seating areas everywhere. The front porch seating has been extended to cover the entire front yard, so you can always find a seat outside on the avenue, and a service bar speeds up your order. More sophisticated, still a great historic place.

There is a new menu, under chef Michael Stoltzfus from Coquette, and the kitchen is open until 9 p.m. and opened on Mondays, so now you have a place to eat out on Blue Mondays! Here’s a look: http://thecolumns.com/thecolumns/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Columns_Menu_01.pdf
I’m excited to begin again with the new Columns Hotel, and I hope you get a chance to come by. Especially on Mondays from 7 to 10!

National Smile Day – May 31, 2021

Wear your best smile to this party as we celebrate National Smile Day every year on May 31. Founded by dentists Dr. Tim Stirneman and Jim Wojdyla of Compassionate Dental Care in Lake in the Hills, Illinois, this day is meant to, you guessed it, “Share with the world what the power of a healthy smile can do!” The best part, this day heralds the beginning of National Smile Month!

National Macaroon Day
 May 31, 2021

Macaron or Macaroon? Well, May 31 is definitely National Macaroon Day and it’s most assuredly an American holiday since the macaroon is definitely an American cookie! However, the confusion is natural. The origins of macaron and macaroon are the same and many of the ingredients overlap. Both use a fair amount of sugar to make these delightful confections. Both use egg whites to make the cookies rise and give them a light texture. However, the French macaron (which actually originated in Italy) uses almond flour at its base while the American macaroon uses shredded coconut to great effect.
We have Mrs. Esther Levy to thank for popularizing the great macaroon. In 1871 Mrs. Levy published the “First Jewish American Cookbook.” She originally published this recipe in the chapter on ‘cakes’ as there was not a chapter on cookies. However, it’s understandable — as the texture of a macaroon isn’t very cookie-like. It is soft and a little chewy, more like a cake than a cookie. However, the bite-size serving is most definitely cookie-like.
Macaroons deserve to be celebrated and recognized for their own characteristics. Coconut was substituted for almond flour when the first coconut palms planted in Florida began to yield fruit. Thus macaroons are not only tasty little delights, they were an early exercise in the locavore movement, eating produce grown close to home.

New Orleans Italians
Ok ...so from the 1919 being of Prohibition until its repeal in 1933 there were numerous raids throughout the City of New Orleans for violations of the making and possession of Alcohol , businesses as well as residential properties were raided by federal agents . Many of the names were that of Italian Americans . I was very sorry to find my great grandfather Joseph V. Borrello misspelled Barrello is on the list as being a resident of a raid !

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

Location, location, location… The Tyrrhenian and the Adriatic Seas with their clear blue skies and the cobalt colored waters, are caretakers to some of the world's most loved wine regions. The coast lines touching both seas are basked in abundant sunlight, enjoy fabulous coastal weather, and are cooled by sea breezes that ventilate the vines and mitigates the temperatures. Vineyards are wedged in between wooded hillsides, rocky slopes and ancient olive groves, and soils vary from alluvial and rich in minerals to sand, limestone, clay, pebbles, and volcanic rock. Besides making for dreamy vacation spots, these diverse wine regions are defined by sea and what it gives them.

Italy is the common denominator, splitting the area into eastern and western sections. To the east you have Croatia, Slovenia, Istria, and the Adriatic coast of Italy. The west brings Provence and Mediterranean coast of France, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and the Italian Riviera and the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy's mainland. Both areas produce amazingly different wines and we decided not to choose one over the other but feature both on back to back Fridays!

Next Friday June 4, Margaret from Lirette Selections will pour wines from the Adriatic - their portfolio is chock full of small production gems made with indigenous grapes from Slovenia and Croatia and fantastic wines from Italy's coast. Yes, there will be orange wine, a pet nat, plus some gorgeous whites and reds. You can sign up here for this tasting:  Adriatic

On Friday June 11, Dave from Artisan Fine Wines will pour wines from the Tyrrhenian Sea - the majority of their wines are from the Kermit Lynch portfolio which focuses on artisanal wines from France and Italy. Tonight night we will feature classically made wines from familiar regions which will include a French rosé, mineral driven whites and Sangiovese based reds from Corsica and Tuscany. You can sign up here for this event, Tyrrhenian

We are still hard at work choosing the final lineups but keep an eye on our social media sites for the selections. Both evenings will offer a broad look at the winemaking styles, terroir and grape varieties of these two areas that benefit greatly from coastal climates provided by the sea. We hope you'll join us!

evenings from 7PM – 10PM.

Wine & Food Experience moves to summer
The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience has announced tickets are now on sale for the 2021 event. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, organizers have moved NOWFE to a mid-summer event, taking place June 9-13. “We are excited about our summer plans,” states Aimee Brown, NOWFE Executive Director. “We will have several of our popular events, however, coming together safely is most important. Rest assured NOWFE 2021 will be a safe place to share your love of food and wine.” Events will have limited attendance; however, some events will have additional time slots added. “We’ve created several ticket packages to help guide our guests through the best experience that fits their needs,” said Joey Worley, NOWFE President. “With varying levels, everyone can find something to fit their budget and their schedule.”
