Eliot Engel rips Ilhan Omar for ‘vile anti-Semitic slur’

Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) called on Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) to apologize for “invoking a vile anti-Semitic slur.”

Omar on Wednesday suggested that lawmakers and activists who support Israel hold “allegiance to a foreign country” — her latest inflammatory statement about Jewish people and Israel.

Late Friday, Engel, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, slammed her remarks, which she made during a panel at a Washington, D.C., cafe.

“I welcome debate in Congress based on the merits of policy, but it’s unacceptable and deeply offensive to call into question the loyalty of fellow American citizens because of their political views, including support for the US-Israel relationship,” said Engel, whose district covers parts of the Bronx and Westchester.

“Her comments were outrageous and deeply hurtful,” added Engel, who is Jewish, “and I ask that she retract them, apologize, and commit to making her case on policy issues without resorting to attacks that have no place in the Foreign Affairs Committee or the House of Representatives.”

Last month, Omar came under fire for tweeting, “It’s all about the Benjamins baby,” suggesting politicians who support Israel only do so for money.

And in 2012, she tweeted, “Israel has hypnotized the world.”

She apologized for both statements, claiming she didn’t know they were offensive.
