Apple fires manager for alleged leaks after she claimed harassment

Apple has reportedly fired Ashley Gjøvik, a senior engineering program manager, for allegedly leaking private company information.

Gjøvik, who’s been at the company since 2015, told The Verge that she learned Thursday her employment at Apple was being terminated, effective Friday.

The firing comes months after she went public with accusations of harassment, sexism and intimidation at Apple, claiming that senior employees kept a whiteboard tally of votes on ways to make her “life a living hell,” and weeks after she filed formal complaints with federal regulators.

Gjøvik has also said she was regularly excluded from important emails, and that some bosses would peer-pressure employees into drinking alcohol during work hours.

Gjøvik first raised concerns in March that her office was in an Apple building on a superfund site, where there’s a history of waste contamination.

She was placed on administrative leave in August while the company investigated some of her allegations. And later that month, she filed a formal complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, which is investigating the matter.

She’s said she also filed complaints with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, California’s labor commissioner’s office and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Now, she said, Apple has fired her for allegedly violating company policy on leaking private information, multiple outlets reported.

“When I began raising workplace safety concerns in March, and nearly immediately faced retaliation and intimidation, I started preparing myself for something exactly like this to happen,” she told The Verge. “I’m disappointed that a company I have loved since I was a little girl would treat their employees this way.”

Gjøvik on Thursday documented some of her interactions with Apple leading up to her firing on Twitter.

She posted an image late Thursday on Twitter that appeared to show a member of Apple’s employee relations team reaching out to her about a “sensitive intellectual property matter” and wanted to speak with her within an hour.

Gjøvik responded by saying that she was forwarding the email to the NLRB investigator and that she wanted to keep all communication in written form.

The Apple employee allegedly said Gjøvik was choosing not to participate and that they would act on the information they had. “Given the seriousness of these allegations,” the image of the email reads, that would mean suspending Gjøvik’s access to Apple systems.

Hours later, Gjøvik was told in an email that her employment at Apple was being terminated, effective Friday, she told The Verge.

“We are and have always been deeply committed to creating and maintaining a positive and inclusive workplace,” Apple said in a statement to the outlet. “We take all concerns seriously and we thoroughly investigate whenever a concern is raised and, out of respect for the privacy of any individuals involved, we do not discuss specific employee matters.”
