NYC's only hands-on science and technology center. Serving the most diverse audience of any science center in the U.S.

About us

Since its founding at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) has inspired millions of people—children, teachers, and families– by offering creative, participatory ways to learn and encouraging people to explore their curiosity and nurture their creativity. Located in Queens, the most ethnically diverse county in the country, NYSCI welcomes 500,000 visitors each year and serves thousands more through outreach in schools, teacher professional development, and participation in a variety of public events and research initiatives. NYSCI is a leader in the science museum field, recognized for its highly regarded exhibitions, programs, and products, all of which are informed by strategies of engagement called Design, Make, Play. The defining characteristics of Design, Make, Play — open-ended exploration, imaginative learning, personal relevance, deep engagement, and delight — are the ingredients that inspire passionate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learners. NYSCI engages diverse communities of learners, particularly young people, in STEM, by fostering the excitement of self-directed exploration and by tapping into the joy of learning intrinsic in young people’s play. Our transformative model for STEM exploration invites broad participation and makes engagement and learning irresistible. NYSCI has approximately 80 full-time and over 65 part-time staff members.

In May, we had the honor of hosting the talented Pan American International High School Theater students as the venue for the community premier of their original play "Patelito." This wonderful production took the movie “Entre Nos” by the amazing Paola Mendoza and incorporated current themes around the struggles of street vendors and of new migrants in NYC more generally. We also invited visitors to contribute to a "Who makes you strong?" post-it board to engage the community in the theme of the show. Some responses can be seen in these photos, along with others from the production. Thank you to everyone who made it possible: Catalina Cruz, Paola Mendoza, Great Adventure Grant from the producers of Kimberly Akimbo on Broadway, as well as community partners including, MetroPlusHealth, Lyft, RDS, Monroe College, the Street Vendor Project, Mr. Helio & Principal Velez!

Our Spring Community Celebration earlier this month was a beautiful, fun-filled event that served nearly 300 local families/over 1,000 people! The large turnout was a testament to the strong sense of community we have built at the New York Hall of Science + our community’s enthusiasm for our initiatives, which focus on providing multiple pathways for engaging with STEM, rooted in principles of equity and inclusion. We continuously aim to foster a culture of lifelong learning, where science becomes a conduit for transformative experiences within our vibrant community. Check out some photos from the day below!

We've made it official with The Big Bubble Experiment! We could not be more grateful to PepsiCo and bubly for sponsoring this POPular exhibition, which brings the science of bubbles to life in an incredibly fun way. Today's ribbon cutting and special, members-only event featured scientific bubly tastings, giant bubble activities, and delicious refreshments, sponsored by PepsiCo R&D. We'd like to especially thank NYSCI Trustee Rene Lammers and Danielle Barbaro for bringing together two organizations who are both passionate about science and STEM education!

NYSCI celebrated its 10th annual "Spring for STEM" event last night with a fascinating panel discussion on smart cities, technology, and urban development. Our Interim President and CEO Minerva Tantoco moderated the conversation with Port Authority CTO Robert Galvin, MTA CTO Rafail Portnoy, and IBM Director of Responsible Technologies Research Stacy Hobson–three leading technologists who share a commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and the future of urban life. We kicked off the discussion with a sneak preview of "CityWorks," NYSCI's planned permanent exhibit slated to open in 2025, which will reveal the complex science, systems, and technologies behind our ever-evolving city. Our panelists shared exclusive insights on the future of smart cities; impending evolutions in public transport; and strategies to ensure new technologies come with equitable access and inclusion for all urban residents. Thank you Robert, Rafail, and Stacy for making this such a special event and to Google for hosting us at the beautiful Pier 57, and to everyone who came out in support of NYSCI last night. We are so proud of our neighbor Louis Armstrong House Museum & Archives for being recognized as one of just ten 2024 recipients of the nation’s highest Museum and Library honor: the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, granted by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This is the highest honor given to museums and libraries that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. The Louis Armstrong House Museum (LAHM) promotes Armstrong’s incredible legacy as an artist and advocate by preserving and interpreting Louis and his wife Lucille’s house and grounds, collecting and sharing archival materials that document Armstrong’s life, developing programs for the public that educate and inspire, and engaging with contemporary artists to create new works. Armstrong made Corona, Queens his home during the last decades of his life and spent much time with the kids in his neighborhood when he wasn't traveling to perform. He seemed to love Corona as much as the world loved him and during the 1964-54 World's Fair in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, there was even a dedicated "Louis Armstrong Day" on June 30th! Congratulations to the Louis Armstrong House Museum team on your well deserved honor!
