How can Christian men and women live faithfully in a world confused over sexuality and gender? Surely we must be reminded of what Scripture teaches. Yet as God’s design for sexuality is being suppressed and denied in the modern world, we need to hear it articulated in a fresh and accessible way. God’s Good Design presents the historic, biblical view of sexuality in a manner that is appealing even to those who have been conditioned to believe it is scary or oppressive. Readers will be persuaded of the goodness of God’s design through straightforward biblical reasoning, personal illustrations, practical applications, and lots of “I never thought of it that way” insights.

“The modern conversation on biblical sexuality is dominated by either politically correct social justice warriors or over-the-top shock jocks. Clary’s plain spoken approach is refreshing and helpful. There are no cheap shots but neither are there any pulled punches.”
–Michael Foster, pastor, East River Church, Batavia, Ohio; author,
It’s Good to Be a Man

“Michael Clary has written a profound and important book. In it he addresses a subject that many powerful and influential people wish he hadn’t addressed. I wish those people were just outside the church, but unfortunately, they’re in it as well. He has had the temerity to speak clearly, and persuasively as an advocate for sexual sanity in an insane time. He’s joined a small resistance movement by doing so. I’m pleased that he’s quoted me—but he also quotes a number of my friends and acquaintances. That says something. There aren’t many of us. A few years ago, it seemed like there were many men and women who could be counted on to endorse sanity. I’m sad to say that has not proven to be the case. But you hold in your hands an invitation to join our intrepid band as we make an appeal for moral and biblical sense in a world of sexual nonsense."
–C. R. Wiley, author of
The Household and the War for the Cosmos and In the House of Tom Bombadil

“God the Father. Male and female he created them. Jesus as the bridegroom to his bride, the church. All throughout Scripture, we see God’s creational design for the two sexes. Yet our culture has so suppressed the significance of manhood and womanhood that they are now not just interchangeable but
exchangeable. Michael Clary offers a deep, biblical corrective to the gnostic thinking that has plagued the Western world for at least six decades now. The irrefutable truth he presents takes the American church to task for its complicity in suppressing God’s good design and reminds us of our call to be distinct from the culture in the matters of sex and sexuality.”
–Megan Basham, reporter for The Daily Wire

“God’s design really is a beautiful design. Those given eyes to see it will come away from Michael Clary’s strong book thinking just that. In these packed pages, you'll find many insights here, much pastoral wisdom, and a lot of courageous care for Christ’s church. This is not a book that shames and scorches the reader; it’s a book that tells the truth, but always points us to the upward call of God in Christ. We live out God's good design entirely, it turns out, by God's amazing grace.”
–Dr. Owen Strachan, Provost, Grace Bible Theological Seminary; author,
The War on Men

God saved me at a young age, around the time I was in elementary school. I met my wife, Laura, on a summer mission trip with CRU. We got married in 1999 and spent the first few years of our marriage on staff with CRU at the University of Louisville.

While in Louisville, I studied at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and earned an M.Div. while helping a friend plant a church as their worship leader. When I graduated seminary in 2008, we moved to inner city Cincinnati to plant Christ the King Church.

I am a student of scripture and theology, an observer of culture, and my desire is to help people apply the gospel to every part of their lives. I am also passionate about biblical anthropology and sexuality.

I'm also a musician. I grew up dreaming of being a professional recording artist. My primary instrument is piano, but I also play guitar, sing, and write music. I've recorded three full length albums of all original music.

Laura and I have one daughter and three sons.

When I sat down to read this book, I fully expected to agree with the Biblical views on gender, and I did. What I did not expect to find was a beautiful recounting of the Gospel from Genesis to Revelation through the lens of human sexuality. This carefully woven presentation opened my eyes to perspectives and truths that I had not considered in many years in church.

My favorite chapter in the book is “The Blueprint for the Household.” Beginning with the household that God set up in the Garden of Eden, Michael navigates the Scriptures cohesively to show us the Biblical model for today’s household. Invaluable lessons not only for marriages, but for understanding OT scripture.

“In the heavens, God will eternally rule over his household on the earth. The seed of this vision was planted in Eden and will come into full bloom at the return of Christ. From now until He returns, God’s future rule is represented in Christian households: husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, parents and children, and brothers and sisters. (pg 95)

Chapter 5 should be required reading for all young singles, where Michael explains how “gendered, Christian virtue is oriented towards fatherhood and motherhood” (in the context of the Biblical household, pg 113). Here, distortions of masculinity and femininity are examined along with the cultural call toward androgyny.

“Eliminating our sexual distinctions might produce a superficial illusion of equality, but that’s the sort of equality that distorts our nature, moves against the grain of the created order, and increases strife and competition between the sexes.” (pg 130)

Because sexuality is part of God’s design for humanity, its significance is both theological and practical. To be clear, there is no shortness of practicality in this book! Using plain language and personal stories, Clary communicates clearly the dangers we are facing as a society. He educates the reader (which was valuable for me) and presents Biblical truth in a straightforward manner. You will not walk away from this book wondering “How did we get here?”; “Where are we now?”; or “What is the Gospel response?”. This biblical primer on human sexuality is a valuable tool not only pastors and elders, but for laymen as well. I highly recommend it.

By comprehensive, I mean that this book presents a big picture view of our gendered design. Clary manages to fit in a discussion of just about every aspect of this subject - especially those that our modern world is so confused about. So this would be a great read for someone who is very new to the Christian faith and its teachings about sexuality. Clary is always pastoral - his desire to instruct and encourage Christians really comes through. Some readers may struggle to accept what he's saying, but his words are gracious and careful. The chapters are well-conceived, and no part of the book feels like fluff - every section is there for a reason. And this is a clear book. It is common for well-meaning Christians to almost apologize for what the Bible teaches - this is not a book like that! Clary invites his readers to assume that God knows what he's talking about. He calls them away from sin and to trust in God's good design for human sexuality.

I think this would make a fantastic resource for a group study or for a teacher/pastor planning a study on this topic. Again, someone with no Christian background would be helped by this book - Clary doesn't assume his readers are overly familiar with the Bible. It would help in training a young person to recognize our culture's disfunction. It would also be a helpful study for a couple wanting to honor Christ with their marriage.

Michael starts off with a survey of how we got from Gnosticism to the LGBTQ+ movement of our day. He illustrates the murder of feminism by transgenderism by drawing parallels to a phenomenon called matriphagy seen among a species of spider. He goes on to build a biblical theology on gender and how we are designed by God for very different callings. The chapter on Gendered Virtue was exceptionally helpful as he uses a lot of biblical examples to show instances of exaggerated and diminished expressions of masculinity and femininity. He further expounds on how that virtue is then used to build households and cites examples of households in his church that have built a family mission in which every member is productive. He speaks firmly against the gift of singleness as a lie of the modern evangelical church. He argues that it disproportionately affects single women as they are led to work as a man should, without being able to bear children for which were designed. In contrast, single men are free to pursue their vocation for which they were designed, without having to shoulder the responsibility to provide and protect a family. He also warns his readers of the dangers of sexual immorality and how even good desires that are wrongly ordered can spark great fires of destruction. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a systematic understanding of biblical sexuality from a pastoral and practical perspective rather than an academic one. If I were to pick one thing about the book that I love above all else, it would be that Michael quotes a ton of biblical references and stands primarily on the authority of the Scripture.
