Governor Lamont and Lt. Governor Bysiewicz Applaud Supreme Court Decision To Uphold the Affordable Care Act
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont and Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz released the following statements applauding today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upholds the Affordable Care Act and preserves healthcare coverage for millions of Americans:
Governor Lamont said, “The decision announced today by the Supreme Court affirms what we in Connecticut have known since 2010 – the Affordable Care Act is a vital, essential, and constitutional partnership between the federal government and the states to expand access to affordable, quality healthcare. In Connecticut, the ACA has been critical to our effort to reduce the uninsured rate in our state to around 5% through sign-ups on our nation-leading Access Health CT marketplace, and registrations in our Medicaid program. The law also empowered all of us with commonsense patient protections. With the Supreme Court reinforcing once again the legal foundation upon which the law was built, the millions of individuals and families across the country and in our state benefiting from the ACA’s healthcare reforms and expansions can rest easy tonight knowing their quality coverage will endure. And states can move forward with confidence and work to further enhance health equity.”
Lt. Governor Bysiewicz said, “Today, hundreds of thousands of families in Connecticut can breathe a sigh of relief. After a decade-long project by conservatives to use the courts to destroy the Affordable Care Act and rip healthcare away from tens of millions of Americans, the Supreme Court has once again preserved health care. In Connecticut, Governor Lamont and I have made expanding healthcare coverage a cornerstone of our administration. Between expanded subsidies allowing middle and working-class families to pay free or reduced premiums, wrap-around Medicaid expansion, and healthcare coverage for thousands of immigrant families, these programs rely in some way upon federal partnership through the Affordable Care Act. We are thankful that the hundreds of thousands of Connecticut families who benefit from the Affordable Care Act can continue to rely upon this landmark law into the future.”
