ISPU plans to host an 18-month fellowship beginning in Fall 2021 to conduct research and analysis to center and uplift Black Muslim experiences. This fellow will be a member of ISPU’s research team and will not only conduct, publish, and widely share original scholarship, but also organize and lead discussions, participate in thought leadership opportunities, and equip changemakers with research. The fellow’s objective is to shed light on a topic relevant to Black Muslim experiences through rigorous research and empower stakeholders toward collective action with this knowledge.
Fellowship Goals
Specific goals of the Black Muslim Experiences Research Fellowship include:

- Discover: Conduct new research or add to existing or ongoing research that centers and uplifts Black Muslim experiences
- Educate: Share research findings with the general public to raise awareness and build understanding
- Equip: Engage relevant stakeholders and change-agents who can take the research and make positive impact on the ground
Fellowship Details
The Black Muslim Experiences Research Fellow will be required to conduct original research (or continue original research already in progress) on a topic related to Black Muslim experiences. By the completion of this 18-month cycle, this fellow will complete:

- Original research and a final report published by ISPU within 12-14 months
- Presentation of findings and implications at an ISPU-hosted dissemination webinar to the public
- Up to 2 additional presentations to relevant stakeholder groups (media professionals, educators, imams, etc) to equip them for driving change
- Consultation with ISPU Research and Communications departments to develop a 1-2 page infographic and short video summarizing key findings from the research
- Participation in media interviews to discuss the research findings, in consultation from ISPU Communications department
- An op-ed piece, with consultation from ISPU’s Communications department
- Participation in thought leadership forums to discuss the research findings, implications, and recommendations
Throughout the fellowship activities, ISPU will provide support to the fellow to complete and disseminate the research. Support includes, but is not limited to:

- Research advice
- Project management
- Limited funding for research costs (i.e. participant honorariums, transcriptions, etc)
- Copyediting and layout design of the final publication
- Hosting and organizing one dissemination event (webinar or in-person tbd)
- Production of a 1-2 page infographic and a 2-3 minute animated video summarizing key findings
- Consultation on writing and placing op-ed piece
- Consultation in connecting to additional presentation and thought leadership forums
Fellowship Logistics
Time commitment: 25 hours per week for 18 months starting on August 2, 2021 (some start date flexibility available). Please note: this position is remote.
Compensation: $50,000
Research budget: $10,000 to support research costs including data collection and analysis
Application & Selection Criteria
Minimum qualifications:Master’s degree (including in progress) or PhD (including in progress) in a relevant field with at least 2 years of research experience.
Selection criteria: Applications will be rated upon how much the proposed research topic fills a gap or demonstrated need on topics related to Black Muslim experiences, offers actionable solutions, and the potential for high impact. Top applicants will be invited for an interview. Selection committee includes ISPU staff and the ISPU Working Group on Black Muslim Research.
