Conversations with a Curator: Lowcountry History Hall with Curator of Historic Archaeology Martha Zierden

Conversations with a Curator: Lowcountry History Hall with Curator of Historic Archaeology Martha Zierden

The Edgefield pottery industry arose in the early 19th century to supply the largely agricultural region with affordable, durable pottery.  Today, these vessels are unique for their alkaline glaze, production in rectangular groundhog kilns, and the incorporation of African labor, mostly enslaved, in their production.  While most of the laborers are anonymous, one literate potter, Dave Drake, signed his vessels.  The Charleston Museum is fortunate to house several of his works, collected by Museum curators in the early 20th century, and now on permanent exhibition.  Curator of Historical Archaeology Martha Zierden will discuss the significance of the Edgefield pottery industry and share archaeological examples of these wares.

Conversations with a Curator allows visitors a chance to have an in-depth look at an object or exhibit in the Museum galleries, ask questions and spark conversations. The Charleston Museum’s collections are both extraordinary and diverse and each Curator-led talk and tour allows participants to immerse themselves in a different aspect of Charleston’s rich history. Conversations with a Curator and Curator Talks programs are typically held on the second Friday of each month

All Conversations with a Curator programs are open to the public and FREE for Members and FREE with admission. EFFECTIVE February 7, 2022:  Per CDC recommendations, masks are encouraged if you have not been fully vaccinated. We appreciate your cooperation in helping to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
