Heart of Knightsville documentary honors Cranston’s Italian Americans
Heart of Knightsville, a feature-length documentary, currently in production, explores Cranston's Italian Americans’ quest to build a sanctuary and their annual celebration of The Blessed Mother, La Madonna della Civita. With meticulous precision and unwavering devotion, the residents of Knightsville come together for this annual tradition, which holds a special significance for the community. The documentary also explores how Italian American immigrants from Cranston’s sister city of Itri overcame oppression to help enhance Knightsville's identity with authentic pride, faith, and fellowship.
Vincent Pastore (The Sopranos) will host the documentary, produced by Bernadette Conte, Tom DeNucci, and Michael Braga. The documentary is directed by Mr. DeNucci (Vault, The Collective), an Award-Winning filmmaker and New England Institute of Technology graduate.
Heart of Knightsville is based on Mrs. Conte’s book Eviva Maria Madonna della Civita: The Eternal Bond of the Itrani Immigrants of Cranston, Rhode Island with Their Homeland of Itri, Italy, and Their Unwavering Faith to the Madonna, available on Amazon.
The filmmakers are working towards a Summer 2025 release.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 23, 2023) — A phantasmagoric symphony of international genre films blasts its way across the big screen as the Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival launches its 23rd Annual Flickers’ Vortex Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror Film Festival
(VORTEX) this week, October 25th - October 29th.
Join us as we showcase the world's best genre films from across the globe. Every year, Vortex brings filmmakers from the Horror, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy genres together to share their work with our festival audience. Screenings will be taking place at venues throughout downtown Providence and offer audience members the opportunity to engage and discuss with attending filmmakers.
This year's festival includes a special screening of the 1925 silent classic The Phantom Of The Opera with live musical accompaniment! World-renowned organist and silent film accompanist Peter Edwin Krasinski will be performing a improvised accompaniment on the Mighty Wurlitzer. The screening will take place at the Providence Performing Arts Center as part of their Stage Fight event.
Another highlight at this year's festival is a very special 40th anniversary screening of the 1983 horror cult classic Sleepaway Camp. Filmmaker and author Jeff Hayes will be in attendance to discuss his new behind the scenes book "Sleepaway Camp: Making The Movie And Reigniting The Campfire." Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the screening.

Actor Jeff Daniels Joins List of World War II Foundation Film Voices.
Two-time Emmy Award-Winning Actor Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Gettysburg, Steve Jobs, Terms of Endearment, Dumb, and Dumber) will be narrating an upcoming documentary film for the World War II Foundation focused on the tragic WWII story of the French village of Oradour-sur-Glane.
The Story: On June 10, 1944, 643 inhabitants of Oradour and nearby residents were massacred by a unit of soldiers from the second SS Das Reich division. It was payback for local French resistance activities in the region. The men in the village were shot. The women and children were taken to the local church and burned alive. There were seven massacre survivors, the last passing away earlier this year.
The tragedy occurred just after the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, and symbolized some of the war's most severe Nazi barbarism. Later, French President Charles de Gaulle ordered the village to be preserved as it was on June 10, 1944, as a memorial to those who suffered under the hands of the over 200 SS troops ordered to destroy the town. The youngest victim of the German atrocity was two months old.
Today, the preserved ruins of Oradour-sur-Glane bear deep physical and emotional scars, and the route through the village streets is accompanied by plaques, which allow visitors to return to June 10, 1944, and visualize the story of the tragic day.
Daniels joins a list of World War II Foundation narrators that includes Tom Brokaw, Kevin Bacon, Dan Aykroyd, Gary Sinise, Tom Selleck, Jane Lynch, Matthew Broderick, Darius Rucker, Luke Bryan, Greg Kinnear, Jim Nantz, Bill Belichick, Damian Lewis, Jon Seda, Jason Beghe, David McCallum, Liev Schreiber, Kyle Chandler, DB Sweeney, Tim McCarver, and Dale Dye.
This film will be the 37th documentary produced by the World War II Foundation for global airing on American Public Television/PBS.

The Roy W. Dean Grant for indie filmmakers is now accepting applications for its Fall Grant. Awarded to a unique film that makes a contribution to society, the winner will receive $3,000 cash and thousands more in film services to help them complete their project. Deadline for submissions is October 31st, 2023.
Now completing its 31st year, the Roy W. Dean Grant has awarded over $2,500,000 in cash and donated film products and services to dozens of filmmakers enabling them to finish work on their projects. Documentaries, short films, narrative features, or web series are all eligible to be considered for this grant. Students are welcome to apply.

In honor of Labor Day, we are excited to announce a special one-time only preview screening of the next episode in the story of SLATERSVILLE, which will take place at the Museum of Work & Culture in Woonsocket as part of their annual Labor Day open house on Monday, September 4th at 1:30PM.
The sixth episode, titled "They Will All Be My Friends," picks up where the first half of the series left off last fall, introducing Henry Plimpton Kendall as Slatersville's new owner in 1915 and many new faces along the way. It will also include a special section on the Saylesville Massacre of 1934.
The second half of the series will run in episodes 6 through 11, all of which are still in post-production for a targeted late 2024 release.
This work-in-progress screening will only be available to those in attendance, and there will be no online viewing event. Seating is limited, and the space can only fit at maximum of 75 people. So be sure to register today by emailing the museum at mowc@rihs.org.
The episode will run 70 minutes, and it will be followed by a Q&A with Director Christian de Rezendes, Co-Writer Joey DeFrancesco, Labor Historian Patrick Crowley, Project Consultant Allison Horrocks, Emmy® Award-Winning Composer Stephen Gilbane and other collaborators on the series.

Each year, the non-profit World War II Foundation partners with significant colleges and universities nationwide to introduce young filmmakers to the experience of filming a World War II documentary overseas.

Welcome actor Kevin Bacon to our long list of narrators. Kevin will be narrating an upcoming film for The World War II Foundation focused on the top-secret British Special Operations Executive (S.O.E.) in WWII and their crucial organizational work with the French resistance just after D-Day, June 6, 1944, in France.
CBS Sports Jim Nantz also recently narrated the 34th film from The World War II Foundation in Nashville. It's the third film narrated by Jim Nantz, with more to come! Nantz lent his voice to Bob Dole, Italy, and World War II, a documentary filmed in the mountains near Florence, Italy. The film chronicles the incredible World War II story of longtime United States Senator and Presidential candidate Bob Dole of Kansas. Awarded to a film that is unique and that makes a contribution to society, the deadline for submission to the Roy W. Dean Grant for Summer 2023 is June 30th. The grant for independent filmmakers includes a $3,500 cash prize and thousands more in donated film production services and products to the winner complete their film.
From the Heart Productions, the 501(c)3 top-rated non-profit which has sponsored the grant since 1993, will also offer the Britt Penrod Award. $500 will be awarded to an applicant with a film that makes an exceptionalcontribution to society.
The Roy W. Dean Grant is open to documentaries, narrative features, short films and web series budgeted at $500k or less. Projects can be at any stage of production. Students are welcome to apply.
The donated services the grant winner receives includes $500 in grip, lighting, or expendables from Filmtools, a $1,295.00 Scholarship to Writers Boot Camp, $600.00 for your Free Closed Captioning by Cineprosmedia, discounted sound mix from Jeff Alan at Alan Audio Works, and more from many heartfelt donors.

On Friday, June 2, SLATERSVILLE received the Lighthouse Spotlight Award from theBlock Island Film Festival. This award honors film projects that focus on matters of historical significance. The Rhode Island Department of Education's "ARTS Initiative" is an excellent opportunity for schools to strengthen and re-energize their arts programming – which has been proven to promote and improve mental health, while also increasing academic performance. The benefits are also two-fold: districts will make decisions through community engagement and make new, important connections to arts organizations and individuals that could benefit students for years to come. Schools have a responsibility to offer and invest in a well-rounded education, and this initiative will supplement those efforts. Five million dollars in funding will be announced in early May and each district in the state will receive money. Funding can be used in any art-related field such as culinary, visual and media arts, performing arts, and design. Investments could include, but are not limited to, the purchase of musical instruments, auditorium upgrades, artists in residence, murals, sculptures, professional development, individual sponsorships and other expenditures that help provide high-quality educational opportunities for all public school students. These funds should supplement schools’ arts programming and not remove arts-related expenses from operational budgets. These funds can also be used to leverage other funding sources, including federal funding. RIDE is coordinating with the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) and the Rhode Island Division of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion to expand outreach into the arts community statewide. Through the outreach, RIDE will create a resource guide of offerings from organizations and individuals in various disciplines.

World Premiere News
After more than a decade in production, we are truly excited to announce that the World Premiere of SLATERSVILLE: America's First Mill Village will take place on Friday, September 16, 2022 at 8pm on Rhode Island PBS. The entire series will consist of 12 episodes and be split into two seasons of six episodes each.
Season One will premiere on September 16, 2022 with a new episode to follow every Friday evening at 8pm through October 21, 2022. Season Two will premiere in 2023 on a date to be determined.
Our Next (and possibly final) Preview Screening
But before that happens, we would like to invite you to our 12th and possibly final preview screening "Controlling No Man's Land," which will take place at the Museum of Work & Culture on Saturday, April 23rd at 2pm. This will be a live public screening only. We will notify you when registration opens for this event. In the meantime, mark your calendars!!
Did you know?...
Episodes 2 and 3 of the new HBO series, The Guilded Age, features scenes filmed (below) at Clouds Hill Victorian House Museum in Warwick, RI? This location plays a huge role in the first half of the SLATERSVILLE series. The home was built in the 1870s by William Smith Slater, son of John and Ruth Slater who ran the village. Congrats to Clouds Hill and the folks at the Rhode Island Film Office.

Rara René
New England-based multimedia artist & filmmaker Estarlyn Hiraldo (Starling The Kid), is working in collaboration with director Adriel Jimenez (@GHETTOSONSHINE) and photographer Mavvro (@mavvro) on a series of films dedicated to a designer bag line by René Manuel Ramos (@renemanuelramos). Inspired by the work of Jamel Shabazz, Dapper Dan, Wes Anderson and more.
The project, “Rara René,” focuses on unique characters from a colorful community. Rara René is a local tailor and designer who is the talk of the town because of his new bags. As Q would say “He got maaaaad flavors.” We follow these characters throughout their Sunday as they all try to get their hands on one of those bags.
The goal is to raise: $4,500

Synopsis: 5 friends 4 of whom are gay lose the leader of their friendship to cancer. Through happenstance they find out he is in trouble in the afterlife. They try to contact him to try to help him with the help of a psychic medium. Along the way they have scary and comical missteps. Ultimately they have closure but come to realize there is a tremendous need for psychics who contact gay dead people in order to achieve closure for their clients. They form the gay ghost hunters group thus setting up for a series.
Character Bios
Chris: White female, lesbian, 50’s, smoker, 5’5”-5’7” in height, squarish boxy body shape, pudgy not fat, very short almost marines like military style haircut, blondish hair. Chris takes over as the group leader after Mike the leader dies, she is a no nonsense business owner short tempered and very assertive.
Luis: light skinned Hispanic male, flamboyant but not gay, 50s, smoker, 5‘5“ to 5‘7“ tall. Very slim build almost to the point of being too skinny. Scraggly well-kept goatee facial hair. Dark hair medium length thinning but not bald well-kept. He was closest to Mike and now drives Mike’s 76 Eldorado convertible which Mike left him. Him and Chris are always at odds with each other in a comical way.
Jeff: White male, gay, in his 50s, 5‘6“ tall to 5’9” tall. Very thin Frenchy style mustache, well-kept hair dark not balding well groomed, smoker. Very prim and proper always dresses very nicely.
Jay: Black male, in his 50’s, gay, shaved head, no facial hair, average build not fat but not skinny. 5’9”-5’11” in height, Smoker, more of a listener than a talker. Him and Chris very close. Is somewhat of a loner outside of the group drives a short haul truck for a living
Mike: white male, Italian, gay, the dead leader of the group. Black wavy hair, handsome, athletic build, 5‘11“ to 6‘2“ tall, cigar smoker, in his 50’s. While he was alive was energetic friendly not overly flamboyant but was very proud of being gay.
This first casting call is for the first five main characters. Subsequent to the hiring of them there will be a second casting for supporting actors and actresses. Subsequent to that they will also be a call for extras.
