61 Players Compete in Dublin Chess Showdown

The Dublin High School Chess Club’s Chess Showdown drew sixty-one K-12 players from around the Tri-Valley on Friday April 7th at Wallis Ranch Clubhouse in Dublin.

Fallon 7th grader Aavi Bharucha lived up to his top seeding to go 5-0 and win the 35-player rated Championship section, while DHS 9th grader Aavhaan Nema went a perfect 4-0 to win the 26-player unrated Challenger section. Rated results here.

The tournament raises money for the DHS Chess Club, which is one of the most popular clubs at DHS, drawing 100+ players every Wednesday at lunch in the library. 

DHS club volunteers also run the Wells Middle School Chess Club on Fridays under Head Coach Disha Seth and the Wallis Ranch chess club on Sundays.


Tied for 2nd through 4th place in the Championship section with outstanding 4-1 scores were Fallon’s Pranav Vivekanandan, Hemanth Kumar Merugu, and Gautham Ramalingam.

Tied for 5th-7th place with very strong 3.5 out of 5 scores were Shriram Boddu, unrated Amogh Chaudhary, and Advaith Nadiminti. 

Top players Under 800 rating were Akhil Veeravalli and Ethan Cheng with 3 points. The final U800 trophy went to Bhargava Ogireddy on tiebreak over Shreyan Goli, Shreyak Porecha, Avyukth Ganapathy Viswanath, and Aarav Goel.


In the unrated Challenger, there was a six-way tie for second place behind Nema with 3-1 records. Those trophy winners were, in tiebreak order: Faisal Yousafi, Annika Majumder, Rishi Krishnan, Yuv Vij, Ayan Nakka and Krish Suddulugari. 

Top players Grade 3 and under were: Abhiraam Veeravalli, Viren Goel, and Arastu Shrivastava.

Chief tournament organizers were DHS Chess Club Treasurer Jeevpreet Singh Ahluwalia and parent-advisors Eric Lai and Bhavna Jain, with publicity and other support by Ben Lau, Katherine Pask, and Disha Seth. 

DHS senior and National Master Evan Ai co-directed the tournament. Floor TDs were Vikrant Ganesan, Tanay Manjunath, Rishi Jain, Gavin Katz, Aryan Jain, and Laksh Jain. 

Thanks to everyone who came out and competed! Thanks to the Wallis Ranch HOA board for allowing us to host the tournament, and Wallis Ranch’s Shane and April for helping us set up the space! Also thanks to the Dublin HS PFSO and the Dublin Unified School District for their ongoing support!

The biggest tournament of the year for DHS is coming this weekend - the K-12 Scholastic State Tournament on April 15-16 organized by BayAreaChess.
