Sir Robin Knox-Johnston

October 13th, 2020: On this mornings show we heard from Sir Robin about his self-prescribed pandemic break – sailing from London up along the eastern shores of Scotland. Darting in and out of lochs on a lazy schedule – he finds four to five crafts moored within. A very different experience from years ago when he sailed this coastline and found no one in sight for days on end. Sunsets in Scotland are superb, and soothing for the soul.

July 21, 2020 We are talking to Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who is by now, a familiar guest on our show.

It’s been a remarkable 51 years since Sir Robin Knox-Johnston sailed into history by winning the Golden Globe Race, becoming the first person to sail solo, non-stop around the world.

Sir Robin set off from Falmouth, on 14 June 1968, with no sponsorship and with many people writing him off before he even started. His journey included many challenges, but on 22 April, 1969, after 312 days at sea, he returned home victorious to global recognition and respect. Of the nine sailors who set out, Robin was the only one to complete the course.

His prominent sailing career has resulted in numerous honours, including the inaugural entry into the International Sailing Federation Hall of Fame. He set the record for the fastest circumnavigation with Sir Peter Blake in 1994; has been named Yachtsman of the Year an unprecedented four times; and was knighted by the Queen for services to sailing. He is also the Co-Founder and Chairman of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which trains everyday people to experience the thrill of ocean racing.

Karen Lile has been having an ongoing conversation with Sir Robin over the weeks of the COVID-19 lock down.
