SSNAP Artist Residency

The Salt Spring National Art Prize Artist Residency is awarded every second year in conjunction with the SSNAP contemporary art competition and Exhibition. The artist residency is valued at $6,000.

This residency enables the recipient to pursue their practice in a supportive, concentrated, community-based atmosphere on Salt Spring Island, BC. Salt Spring Island is recognised as having an active community of artists working in many disciplines and numerous arts venues that are supported by an engaged public. The setting is rural to semi-urban — highly suitable for many artistic endeavours and an ideal location for our artist residency program.

Eligibility

All SSNAP 2023/24 finalists are eligible to apply for the 2024 residency.

Location and timing

The SSNAP Artist Residency will take place on Salt Spring Island between March and October 2024. Salt Spring and other Southern Gulf Islands artists may apply. Should an artist from Salt Spring Island be awarded the residency, it will be held off-island.

Duration

To take full advantage of the award, a spring/summer/early autumn residency period of 15–25 days in 2024 is anticipated.

Use of funds

The artist residency funds may be used for expenses associated with the residency. These include travel, accommodation, studio access (providing suitable studio space is available) and supplies.

Community interactions

An integral part of the artist residency includes engaging with the island’s arts community and public. The recipient will develop and share their practice through events such as talks, workshops, open studio, and performance. Innovative ideas for community enrichment are welcomed and encouraged.

Recipient announcement date

The winner of the SSNAP Artist Residency will be announced on October 21, 2023 at the SSNAP 2023/24 Gala Awards ceremony.

How to apply

Application details will be provided to all SSNAP finalists in July 2023.
