Ron DeSantis counts on shorter lifespans to help with senior entitlement crisis

DeSantis Iowa Never Back Down
'What we've had in this country is a pretty significant decline in life expectancy.'

Gov. Ron DeSantis says people aren’t living as long as they used to, so that should help protect them from losing Social Security and Medicare protections when they get old.

“It should reflect life expectancy and what we’ve had in this country is a pretty significant decline in life expectancy. And so given those circumstances to raise (qualifying ages), it would be cutting against where the demographics are going. So that’s not going to happen,” the Governor said in Iowa Saturday.

DeSantis made the comments during a Never Back Down event in Garner, and it continues a theme of recent vintage in which he has noted people are dying at younger ages than they did years back.

During an interview earlier this month, the Florida Governor told CNBC viewers that “in the last five or six years, life expectancy in the United States has gone down.”

He did not blame it solely on the COVID-19 pandemic, even after his interviewer’s prompting.

“I think it started before COVID and I think it’s continued even here afterwards. I think it’s more than, more than just COVID. I mean, I think that there’s deaths of despair. I think you have (drugs),” DeSantis said.

Life expectancy in the U.S. has decreased to 76.4 years in 2023 from 77.28 in 2020, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

“So, I think it’s hard to say, you know, raise the age (for Social Security eligibility) when the average life expectancy is going down. We used to think that life expectancy was just going to keep going up and that’s just not been the case.”

DeSantis’ position on senior citizen entitlements has been a moving target in recent months, as he has been walking back previous calls for “market forces” and privatization to replace current programs.

DeSantis has said before that changes for younger generations are inevitable, noting he doesn’t expect to draw the entitlement without material changes in federal practices.

“I think a lot of younger people like me are receptive to this because I don’t assume we’re going to get any of this at this point right now,” the 44-year-old Governor said during a May interview with John Stossel.

He crashed the hospital system and created a shortage of nurses. It’s tough to find medical care in some places now.

Not to mention car insurance has skyrocketed. Where is our damn governor? Oh, that’s right I forgot he’s on the campaign trail using the monies that Floridians had donated to better equipped Florida. He decided to use it for his campaign for the presidency, which he will never become thank God.!

Do you live here? I do. The DeSantis Covid story is pure, unadulterated BS. The economy was horrific here through the entire active phase of the epidemic. And inflation is, by far, the highest in the nation. He is the worst governor in the history of governors. He stinks.

Not really. And, he shut down, accurate reporting.
I happen to now, because, i work, in the conservative media industry.
Republicans, btw, died, at a higher rate, than non republicans, in the same democgraphics. why? because of folks, like, Governor ron, who downplayed the vaccine, which saved lives. Again, I know. I’ve talked with too many folks in the medical industry and hospitals here in florida. It was unforltunately, quite common, to hear these dying words, “i wish I would’ve got the vaccine.”

          September 8, 2023 at 12:51 pm

You’re wrong about the Covid vaccine. Millions have died suddenly because of crazy symptoms coming up after they get the clot shot not to mention it’s only the vaccinated people who seem to get Covid over and over and over again. I’m glad I never took the vaccine, it’s a bio weapon.

    Good evening America,
Most politicians are not at liberty to tell “The Truth, The Whole Truth, And Nothing But The Truth. Fourtunatly your hero, Earl Pitts American, is here to tell you that kind of truth:
    THE TRUTH
Mostly the shorter life span is due to the unhealthy life style choices made by a certian group (or groups) of our population here in America. I, Earl Pitts American will run some unhealthy life choices by you and next to them the type of American most comonly engaged and termanially affected [Shorter Life Span] by these poor life choices:
    Drugs.) Dook 4 Brains Leftists

So America there you have it. After reading the list above you may be able to pin point a segment of society most at risk to live a shorter life-span and thus free up a lot of Social Security Benifits.
If you are able to comprehend the above true facts and determine which segment of our society is most likely to die early – or even if you would just like to submit a random guess please leave your choice in the comment section below.

    Thanks Earl,
This is like an excerpt from a top notch social-science research project.
I got out my scientific calculator and did the complex math. And Earl I came up with a shocking revelation that it may be the Dook 4 Brains Leftists who are going to leave society 20 – 28.5 years earlier than the governments actuarial tables predict.
This will free up tons of money to either fund Social Security for the next 500 years or be whizzed away by “Rich Men North Of Richmond” in 3.5 years.
Its more important than ever to vote conservative my fellow patriots.

Actually, seven of the highest top ten states for murder are in red-governed states. These red-states have the highest rates of gun violence: Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri, Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, Maryland and Georgia.

        August 27, 2023 at 12:42 pm

Here’s a fact: right wing whiners like you constantly claim Democratic cities like Chicago are wastelands of crime and a drain on the country. Chicago, like every big city in America, does have slums where the poor become victims of gang violence. And that makes headlines, as it should. But Chicago is also an economic powerhouse with a GDP (gross domestic product) greater than most nations on the planet — only 21 countries have a GDP greater than the city of Chicago. The same is true of Los Angelas, New York, and other Democrat cities in America. The slums of those cities are crime-ridden, but those cities are the economic engines of the United States.

Well, actually, before modern medical advances such as antibiotics came onto the scene, a lot of early Social Security recipients retired, caught pneumonia a few years later and died rather than surviving into their 80s and 90s as is more common these days.
DeSantis seems to be making things up as he goes along, though.

Ron, you can thank the mining of rare earth minerals and fertilizer for reducing the life expectancy for those poor souls living along the core of Bone Valley. And with your latest payoff to the miners they will be expanding their efforts which will only be reclaimed but NOT RESTORED to their original habitat for many, many years. Destroying more of the wetlands that filter the toxic waste out of our water is not a solution either!

Every time DeSantis opens his mouth, he supplies the rope to hang himself as a Presidential candidate. For someone who graduated from 2 Ivy League schools, he is certainly stupid in his analysis of social trends. I have news for him. My generation, born in 1940-45 is living quite well into their 80s, healthy and productive in their old age. His analysis is incorrect, as so much of his thinking (as it were) is.
