PBL with ELLs in mind Collaborative: Launching Event! 

This is an application to participate in a yearlong project, PBL with ELLs in Mind  - Year II Pilot. Teams of social studies/humanities, mathematics, collaborating ENL teachers and assistant principals will be engaged in in-person and virtual sessions during the 2023-24SY and also be invited to participate in focus group applications. The goal is to deepen their knowledge around the “what” and “how” of PBL as a vehicle to strengthen the instructional core for linguistically diverse learners. 


To start off strong, the Division of Multilingual Learners will offer kick-off events over the summer to 2 cohorts of educators who apply to participate. This will help us set purpose for the PBL with ELLs in Mind Collaborative, frame goals and introduce a year-long scope and sequence for this K-12 project.

Supporting Immigrant-Origin Students in Elementary and Middle Schools


This professional learning opportunity for elementary, middle and K-8 schools will discuss the laws and cases that have transformed education in America for immigrant-origin students; build on innovative ideas shared by schools from across the country; and help schools develop supportive approaches that can be applied to their own settings by reflecting on how their students' stories and experiences can impact classroom practices and shape school values.


Facilitated by public school teacher and author, Jessica Lander, educators will unpack her book, Making Americans, as well as other curated resources, with the aim of making concrete connections to educators' on-the-ground work and creating school-based projects and programs to support immigrant-origin children and their families.


Registration Note: Participants are encouraged to register with one other colleague (or more!) from their school in order to collaborate and support each other in this work.

Project-Based Learning with ELLs in Mind Collaborative SY 2023-24 

Are you interested in participating in the Project-Based Learning with ELLs in Mind Collaborative this school year? During this yearlong series, teams of K-12 social studies, humanities, mathematics, ENL, bilingual teachers, assistant principals and district leads will be engaged in in-person and virtual sessions to deepen their knowledge around the “what” and “how” of PBL as a vehicle to strengthen the instructional core for linguistically diverse learners. Content-Rich Reading, Talking & Writing Practices for Multilingual Learners in Integrated Social Studies & ENL Settings (Grades 4-12)


This in-person session introduces a 6-part hybrid professional learning series which will explore a research-based Language-Based Approach to Content Instruction (LACI) Teaching and Learning Cycle, each phase in a cycle and how the phases support content-rich, language-learning practices in social studies and civics. Participants will take a deep dive into Build Shared Knowledge of a topic through practices that activate and build background knowledge and language skills, including vocabulary. CTLE hours are available.


Since each session introduces an instructional practice which is part of a connected, but nonlinear teaching and learning cycle, participants can choose to either join all sessions or just the session(s) that they are interested in attending the most, plus Session 1, which is required to all.

Content-Rich Reading, Talking & Writing Practices for Multilingual Learners in Integrated Social Studies & ENL Settings (Grades 4-12)


This virtual session (part of a 6-part series) will explore Collaborative and Independent Constructions, the fifth phase of the LACI Teaching and Learning Cycle. Participants will explore and apply guidelines for developing linguistically responsive writing feedback to plan writing instruction that leads to effective collaborative and Independent extended constructions.


This session is part of a connected, but nonlinear teaching and learning cycle. Because of that participants can choose to join this session, plus Session 1, which is required to all.

Strategies to Enhance Reading Skills in ENL Instruction: Teach Students to Monitor Their Comprehension


This session (part of an 8-part series) will explore research-based reading strategies for multilingual learners and English language learners in Grades 4-12 in ENL Standalone and Integrated settings.  From teaching decoding strategies in context to giving students the opportunity to practice with challenging texts, each session will introduce a new reading strategy and provide space for participants to apply that learning to their own teaching practices.
