Holiday season means tournament time

While local sports teams enjoyed a five-day break for Christmas, action heats back up again Thursday, Dec. 27, with 10 holiday tournaments scheduled for area high school and collegiate teams.

While local sports  teams enjoyed a five-day break for Christmas, action heats back up again Thursday, Dec. 27, with 10 holiday tournaments scheduled for area high school and collegiate teams.

Two of the tournaments will be a home with the University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team hosting the Superior Shootout and the Yellowjacket men’s hockey team hosting the Superior Showdown.

 

College hoops

The UWS women will host the inaugural Superior Shootout Saturday, Dec. 29, and Sunday, Dec. 30, at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

The tournament begins Saturday with St. Scholastica and UW-Stout playing at 1 p.m., followed by the host Yellowjackets and Concordia (Minn.) at 3 p.m.

Saturday's games are St. Scholastica vs. Concordia at 1 p.m., followed by Superior and Stout at 3 p.m.

The UWS men aren't scheduled to play a tournament, but will still be in action against the St. John's Johnnies at 3 p.m.Saturday, Dec. 29, in Collegeville, Minn.

 

Superior Shootout

Saturday, Dec. 29

Scholastica vs. UW-Stout, 1 p.m.

Concordia (Minn.) vs. UW-Superior, 3 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 30

St. Scholastica vs. Concordia (Minn.), 1 p.m.

UW-Stout at UW-Superior, 3 p.m.

  College hockey The UWS men's Superior Showdown is also Saturday and Sunday at Wessman Arena.

Saturday’s semifinal games are Marian vs. St. Scholastica at 4 p.m., followed by Trinity (Conn.) vs. UWS at 7 p.m.

The consolation and championship games are scheduled for 4 and 7 p.m., respectively, on Sunday, Dec. 30.

 

Superior Showdown

Marian vs. St. Scholastica, 4 p.m.

Trinity (Conn.) at UWS, 7 p.m.

Boys hockey

The Superior High School boys hockey team will play in Green Bay Notre Dame’s Showdown in Titletown.

The Spartans open against Loyola (Ill.) Academy at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Cornerstone Arena in Ashwaubenon.

Loyola Academy is the defending Illinois state champion and currently has a record of 28-7.

GBND will host Madison Edgewood at 5 p.m. with the winners and losers playing Friday, Dec. 28.

The tournament runs through Saturday, Dec. 29.

The Spartans went 2-0-1 in last year’s tournament with wins over West Salem and Waukesha, and a 4-4 tie with Wausau West.

  Girls hockey The SHS Spartans will once again compete in the Culver’s Cup in Madison.

The Spartans open against Brookfield (0-6) at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Hartmeyer Ice Arena.

The Spartans will play either the Metro Lynx or Northland Pines on Friday, Dec. 28.

The tournament runs through Dec. 29.

The Spartans have always played well in the Madison tournament, including last year when they defeated Onalaska and St. Croix Valley before losing to University School of Milwaukee in the championship game.

  Spartan hoops The Superior boys will play in the Tartan (Oakdale, Minn.) Tournament and the girls will be in Rhinelander.

The SHS boys will play games on Thursday, Dec. 27, and Friday, Dec. 28. Both games are at 6:15 p.m.

Other teams in the tournament include Chisago Lakes, Farmington, Fridley, Park of Cottage Grove and White Bear Lake.

The Spartan girls will play Wisconsin Rapids in the opening round of the Rhinelander Holiday Classic at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28.

Superior is also scheduled to play at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, against either Rhinelander or Madison LaFollette.

 

Tiger hoops

The NHS girls will play in the Cloquet Invitational, while the Tiger boys will play at in the Rice Lake Tournament.

The Tiger girls will play the host Lumberjacks at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, then Minneapolis Edison at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28.

The NHS boys will play Northland Pines on Friday, Dec. 28, and Osceola on Saturday, Dec. 29. Both games begin at 5 p.m.

 

Solon Springs

The Eagle boys basketball team will play in they Clayton Tournament.

Solon Springs opens against Prairie Farm at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27.

Other opening-round games include South Shore vs. Flambeau and Boyceville vs. Clayton.

The Eagles will play the host Bears at 2:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28.

 

Wrestling

Northwestern will compete against 40 other schools in the River Falls Tournament at 8 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28.

Among the other local schools in attendance will be Barron, Bloomer, Chetek, Cumberland, Hayward, Rice Lake, St. Croix Central, St. Croix Falls, Shell Lake and Somerset.

Superior will compete in the Eau Claire Memorial Invitational at 9:15 a.m., also on Friday.

Joining Superior at ECM will be La Crosse Central, La Crosse Logan, Cloquet, Plainview-Elgin-Millville, Wausau East, Mahtomedi, Mondovi, Abbotsford, Ladysmith, Osseo-Fairchild, Whitehall, Pine Island, Independence and Grand Rapids.
